Sleepy Driver Involved In Head-On Crash

A Phoenix man, who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, crashed head-on into a car Thursday morning on Highway 87 near the Bashas’ Shopping Center.

Robert Felton was heading north on Highway 87 in a Mercury Sable around 8 a.m. when he fell asleep and drifted into the middle lane, said Payson Police Sgt. Dean Faust. Michael Fisher of Payson was waiting to make a left turn into the plaza in his Toyota Tundra when Felton crashed head-on into him, Faust said.

Felton was taken to Payson Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries, while Fisher refused medical treatment.

Felton has not been cited, but officers are still investigating. Faust said speed was not a factor.

Two lanes of traffic were closed, but reopened by 8:30 a.m.
