Driver Safety Class set

AARP will hold a Driver Safety Class from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 8 at the Payson Senior Center, 514 W. Main St.

This is a four-hour class for motorists age 50 and older. AARP membership cost for tuition and materials is $12, however, for the discounted rate, participants must have their current AARP membership card and driver’s license with them; all other participants must pay $14. Only cash will be accepted.

Participants may be eligible for an automobile insurance discount upon completion of the course.

Hellsgate Fire District board meets Wednesday

The monthly board meeting of the Hellsgate Fire District will be held at Station 21, Star Valley, on Wednesday, July 8 at 5:30 p.m.

Deadline to register for creative writing workshop

Beginning and experienced writers are invited to attend a creative writing workshop on July 11 at Gila Community College, 201 N. Mud Springs Road. This workshop, titled “Writing from the Heart: Developing your Writer’s Intuition,” is sponsored by Arizona Press Women and is open to the public.

Registration with light refreshments begins at 9:30 a.m. The 10 a.m. to noon workshop will engage participants in a series of intuitive writing exercises geared to help boost creativity, reduce stress and eliminate fears that lead to writing procrastination.

The speaker, Jennifer Baltz, is a writing and creativity coach from Payson. She says, “This will be a fun, hands-on workshop with people working in small groups. So bring pen and paper, laptop computers or other writing tools. We will really get the creative juices flowing.”

Community Flea Market

The Community Presbyterian Church offers a fun-filled event on the second Saturday of each month in its parking lot: a community flea market. Set for July 11, Aug. 8 and Sept. 12, sales will open at 7 a.m. and close promptly at 1 p.m.

Space registration is held at the church office between 9 a.m. and noon weekdays only. It is just $10 for a 10-foot-by-19-foot space, plus a refundable $10 deposit per vendor.

Payson Farmers Market

Each Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon through October, Rim Country residents and visitors can enjoy the bounty of the area at the Payson Farmers Market in the parking lot of the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St.

The market will have locally grown and produced vegetables, fruit, flowers, goat cheese and fudge, honey, jams and jellies, naturally sweetened fruit butters, eggs, free range and organic, baked goods, organic herbs and teas, pecans and more.

Mazatzal Casino Arts & Crafts Fair Saturday

The Mazatzal Hotel and Casino is sponsoring an Arts & Crafts Fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, July 11. It will feature watercolor and oil paintings, birdhouses, jewelry of all kinds, including silver, beaded, gemstone, crystals and more. There will also be lots of woodworking pieces, lamps and gourds.

Enjoy the arts and crafts and shopping while DJ Craig entertains with his music.

Motorcycle ride to Strawberry

All Payson area riders are invited to meet at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 11 at the Payson United Methodist Church, 414 E. Easy St. (located behind Ace Hardware and next to Bison condominiums). Riders will travel to Strawberry for lunch.

Pine Shop Hop

Many merchants in Pine have extended hours the second Saturday of the month for the Pine Shop Hop, with many featuring free refreshments and demonstrations.

The shops participating in the July 11 events, open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., will be: Pine by Design, Tymeless Antiques and Treasures, Moose Mountain Gifts and Antiques, Pine Creek Cabins, Gingerbread House, Crystal Lotus Gallery and Spiritual Life Center, Carol’s Country Crafts, Quilt Shop, Visions Speaking Rock Shop and Emporium, Pine Country Antiques and Pine Yarn Shop.

Concerts Under the Stars

The Payson Parks and Recreation Department has plenty to offer for the long, lazy days — and nights — of summer.

Every Saturday evening through the end of July, there will be free music in Green Valley Park, plus vendors and fun. Vendor booths open at 6 p.m. and music starts at 7 p.m.

CG Blues will be the featured performers Saturday, July 11 on the bandstand at the park. Future programs will feature Junction 87 with country July 18 and the Payson Jazz Trio with jazz July 25.

Ambassadors of Light to give free concert July 11, 12

Phoenix area young adults, organized as the Ambassadors of Light, will present a free concert of popular music at 7 p.m., Saturday, July 11 at 913 S. Ponderosa St. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

On Sunday at 7 p.m., a different performance at the same location will highlight song and inspirational stories.

Both performances are at no cost and open to the public.

Jazz concert features vocalist Sherry Petta

Sherry Petta will be the guest artist featured at the next Payson Friends of Jazz Concert. She will perform with Mark DeCozio on piano (who may add a few vocals), John Willis on upright bass, and Gerry Reynolds on drums at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 12 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St.

The Payson Friends of Jazz and the Community Presbyterian Church sponsor the concert, part of a monthly series. A $5 donation at the door is requested; it covers not only an afternoon of great music, but refreshments.

Concert in Pine

The Church on Randall Place in Pine will be hosting a concert from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, July 12. The group performing is called “Hope.” It is comprised of eight very talented students from California Baptist University, who are travelling the U.S. during the summer months to minister through music.

This event will take place at the church, 6338 W. Randall Place, Pine.

Introduction to computers

Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Easy St., invites residents and visitors to participate in its sixth year of free, hands-on computer labs and learning sessions.

Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, July 14 and 28, and Aug. 4, 11 and 25. Each session will have hourly refreshment breaks.

Learn about Arizona Virtual Academy July 14

Arizona Virtual Academy will have a meet and greet program from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 14 at the Crosswinds Restaurant, 800 W. Airport Road.

Students can do a seasonal project while the adults can mingle, visit and ask questions. This is a great chance for interested families to ask questions and learn more about AZVA. AZVA has completed its accreditation process and is a fully accredited K-12 grade, free charter school.

Payson Pro Rodeo Ring of Honor induction

The Rim Country’s world champion cowboys and cowgirls will be inducted into the Payson Pro Rodeo Ring of Honor at the August Doin’s Dinner and Dance on Friday, July 17 at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino. This event is sponsored by the Payson Pro Rodeo Preservation and Alliance group.
