The Point Fire was started by lightning on Milk Ranch point in the Coconino national Forest and was first sighted on Sunday, may 31, 2009. The Point Fire is being managed for resource benefits that include:
Reducing heavy fuel loading to reduce catastrophic wildfire danger.
The re-introduction of natural fire into the ecosystem.
To raise over-story base height to avert ground fires from climbing into low-hanging branches and getting into the tree canopy and causing a crown fire.
To recycle valuable nutrients back into the soil.
To maintain and enhance healthy wildlife habitat.
Fire personnel from the Coconino national forest are employing tactical actions to manage the Point Fire within a predetermined area that is defined by geographical features.
