Lots Of Good Fishing, Activities In Rim Country

Oh the wonderful lazy days of summer! One of our favorite things to do at this time of the year is go fishing.

We’ve gotten trout at Bear Canyon Lake and Haigler Creek, and bluegill at the East Verde River so far.

The wild flowers and cacti are all in bloom, everything is green and lush from the recent rains, and it is the perfect time of the year to head north for some refreshing relief from the desert heat.

The folks of Pine and Strawberry welcome you all to our communities this weekend for the Strawberry Patchers Quilt Show, the 19th Annual Strawberry Festival, the Strawberry Valley Blues Festival, the Second Saturday Shop Hop, and much, much more!

Quilt Show

Times and details for each event are as follows:

The Strawberry Patchers Quilt Show takes place on Friday and Saturday, June 12 and 13 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., then again from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 14.

The Patchers invite you to shop at their special Berry Boutique while viewing more than 100 quilts that will be on display.

There will also be numerous sewing and quilting items plus some very special vendors at the Library Activity Room adjacent to the Cultural Hall where the Quilt Show takes place. Cost is just $2 for admission which is quite a bargain by anybody’s standard.

Blues Festival

The Strawberry Valley Blues Festival begins Friday the June 12 with free music workshops and camping available. Performances take place both Saturday and Sunday (June 13 and 14), with several talented bands scheduled to perform each day.

Cost is $15 for adults or $25 for both days. Youth 12-18 cost $10 or $15 for both days. Kids 11 and under attend for free.

The festival takes place out Fossil Creek Road in Strawberry near the end of the paved section.

The popular Strawberry Festival takes place Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14 from 9 a.m. until around 3 p.m.

There will be at least 76 vendors selling many high quality items at reasonable prices.

New additions include pony rides and a jump castle for the kids. The festival is held in downtown Pine at the Community Center.

The Second Saturday Shop Hop takes place each month throughout the summer featuring most of the art, craft and antique shops in Pine.

Each shop offers an array of unique items — once you’ve discovered Pine’s shops, you won’t want to bother going down to the Valley to purchase gifts for yourself or others. The shops go all out on the second Saturday, often offering music and demonstrations like jewelry making, knitting, or crafts for the kids — they know that once you’ve visited, you’ll make a point of coming to Pine to find that perfect gift.

Riff Raff Club garage sale

The Riff Raff Club will hold its annual garage sale and Rifle Raffle on Saturday, June 13 and Sunday, June 14 at the parking lot of the Ponderosa Market.

There are lots of quality items available-including camping gear plus an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win two high quality rifles and/or a shotgun.

All of the proceeds are used to purchase items for members of our community in need over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

The Isabelle Hunt Historic Library Gift Shop will be open during the Strawberry Festival as well.

Stop by the gift shop located next to the Randall House Restaurant on either Saturday, June 13 or Sunday, June 14 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Proceeds from the beautiful handcrafted gift items help fund ongoing library programs.

As you can see, there is something for everyone to do this weekend in Pine and Strawberry — so gather your family and friends and head north!

Vacation Bible School

The First Baptist Church of Pine will host a Vacation Bible School for children from pre-school age through sixth-grade Monday, June 15 through Friday June, 19 from noon until 3 p.m. each day.

On Thursday evening there will be a special night for the parents to come see what the kids have been learning.

VBS is a great place for kids to come have loads of fun, make new friends, participate in arts and crafts, and most of all, learn about Jesus.

The First Baptist Church will also host their monthly Community Supper on Wednesday, June 17. The supper is served between the hours of 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. and is absolutely free.

Son Rock Kids Camp, Vacation Bible School, will be held June 15-19 for all children from pre-school through sixth-grade at the Pine/Strawberry School. There will be singing; learning how to build your life on the Rock: Jesus!; refreshments and fun with your friends, as well as making new friends. On Thursday evening of the week, all parents and friends will be invited to join us for supper and enjoy hearing what the children have learned. For more information, call First Baptist Church at 476-3552.

Block party

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 20 when the Church on Randall Place will host a summer block party at the Pine Community Center from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. There will be games, food, fun and music by Covenant 31.

Everyone in our community is invited to come enjoy this free event.

Sharon Balentine would like to thank the entire community and also the many volunteers who help out at the Pine Strawberry Food Bank.

Their hard work and dedication coupled with the generous donations by so many help to keep this ongoing program providing food for those who are experiencing hardship in Pine and Strawberry.

The Strawberry Patchers have partnered with the folks at Isabelle Hunt Memorial Library to offer quilting classes to young people between the ages of 6 and 17. The classes will take place on the Tuesdays and Fridays of July 7, 10, 14 and 17 between 9 and 11 a.m.

Please register before July 1 by calling the library at 476-3678, or stopping in.

Beginning July 1 the library will have the following new hours: Tuesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The library is closed on Sunday and Monday. Also, due to budget cuts, the library has lost its cleaning service funds.

If you are interested in volunteering to help out in that area, call manager Becky Waer and she’ll fill you in on all the details.

Health Fair

Don’t forget the Health Fair scheduled for Friday, June 26 at the Pine Community Center Ramada.

The event is sponsored by Dr. Lisa York of the Pine Strawberry Medical Clinic, and will include many different educational tools and an opportunity to be tested or screened for several conditions such as thyroid, cholesterol, diabetes, and prostrate cancer. Some of the tests require a minimal fee.

For those who would like to register for a mammogram or Pneumovax, please call the clinic to register in advance at 476-3258.
