Susan Torrens and Kelly O’Neill hooked up to win first-place honors in one of the Payson Women’s Golf Association’s premier summer classics.
The Memorial Tournament is played each year in memory of PWGA members who have died.
This year, Torrens and O’Neill out-dueled two veteran-laden teams for the gold medal. Dead-knotted for second were the duos of Laura Meyocks/Mary Cain and Mary Jones/Jeannie Griffin.
Finishing high in the standings was nothing new for Meyocks whose won about every PWGA honor possible.
Claudia Bullard and Karen Peterson finished third in the Memorial that was played May 26 at Payson Golf Course.
In a June 15 “front nine or back nine and 1/2 handicap” formatted tournament, O’Neill again pocketed prize money teaming up with Lois Judd to take the gold in the first flight.
Joyce Goff and Jan Burns won the second flight and Isabella Sockrider and Kay Davis were third flight winners.
Karen Peterson and Jan Burns pocketed closest-to-the-pin cash.
In a June 9 “best ball of the foursome” fray, O’Neill once again was a top gun teaming with Shari Cody, Marilyn Schall and Earlene Brewer to take first. The foursome of Alesha Calderwood, Goff, Sockrider and Cain was second. O’Neill and Goff were closest-to-the-pin champs.
Top laurels in the first flight of a “blind nine” shoot out contested June 2 was taken by Meyocks.
Sockrider was first and Burns second in the second flight.
In flight three, Bullard swung her way to the gold medal and Calderwood and Schall tied for second.
Jennie Griffin won the fourth flight besting Brewer, the runner-up.
Meyocks and Goff were closest-to-the-pin champions.
During the month’s fray, the PWGA welcomed a new member, Judy McFall.
“She is not new to Payson and has been playing with the nine-holers,” Bullard said.
PWGA members played the first round of the annual President’s Cup on June 23 and will play the second and final round on June 30.
