Love Is In The Air

Several people, including Maria Dedmon, saw this message in the skies over Payson on Wednesday.

L-O-V-E fluttered through the air for all the town to see Wednesday afternoon when Chris Higgins chartered a plane to propose to his girlfriend, Maria Dedmon.

Higgins, owner of Scoops Ice Cream, was looking for an inventive way to ask for Dedmon’s hand in marriage. After seeing retired private pilot Hawkeye Matthews fly an American flag over the town on Veterans Day, he got the idea for the ‘high’ impact message.

After much pining and planning, Higgins got the location and message ironed out. He would stick with the traditional, “Maria will you marry me?”

Dedmon, unaware of Higgins’ plan, had no idea the hike they were taking Wednesday had a secret motive.

“We were hiking on Houston Mesa Road and he distracted me when he saw the pilot taking off,” she said. “So I was looking away and then it was flying right in front of me.

“It was amazing, really romantic,” she said.

Dedmon and Higgins, who have dated for a year-and-a-half, have already planned a March 15 wedding.

“I knew it was coming up,” she said, “I was just waiting.”

The pair met at Fireside Espresso and plan to hold their wedding reception at the shop.
