Scottsdale Man Found Dead Near Roosevelt Lake

A 29-year-old Scottsdale man who went missing after stopping at the Jake’s Corner Store in Tonto Basin Wednesday morning was found dead Friday evening on a road near Roosevelt Lake.

Jason William Witherill stopped at the corner store to purchase grocery items and a Tonto National Forest pass Feb. 25. Authorities believe he went four-wheeling in the Four Peaks area in his 1979 Chevy Blazer.

When Witherill did not show up, his family alerted authorities, who began searching the area. On Friday, the Tonto Rim Search and Rescue was called out to assist in the search.

Searchers got a break Friday, when a man called to report a truck parked on Forest Road 429 that looked deserted.

“A guy was back there on a road to ride his horse and he noticed the truck parked back in the trees,” said Commander Bill Pitterle.

“He contacted the Sheriff’s Office and mentioned there was a vehicle on the road.”

The man came by the command center in Punkin Center and identified the truck he saw as Witherill’s Blazer.

Pitterle and several members of Tonto Rim Search and Rescue went to the area and found Witherill dead on a small road 50 yards from the truck near the Vineyard Picnic Area.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death.
