Longtime local resident Steve Cline lost his home to a devastating fire the morning of Feb. 24. He is currently in the burn unit at Maricopa County Hospital in Phoenix with severe injuries.

A benefit is planned to help with the many expenses he will have as he recovers and rebuilds his life, organizers said.

The Butcher Hook in Tonto Basin will have the event on April 4.

Cline is a fifth generation rancher who has been raising cattle on Tonto for most of his 72 years. After being forced to sell all his cattle, Cline started participating in shooting competitions and predator calling. He traveled all over the U.S.

Tonto Basin residents know him from the many mornings he was at the Butcher Hook drinking coffee with his friends and family and keeping up on all the news.

Residents of the area also know Cline because he was always there on the east side of Tonto Creek helping the newcomers understand the power of the river. If he said, “Don’t cross the creek” it was wise to listen. He knew better than most what could happen to you.

Cline has supported every event in Tonto Basin and donated to many, many functions. Now Tonto residents are coming together to help him. There are many benefits being planned, the first will be April 4 at the Butcher Hook.

A barbecue will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.; an auction and raffle begins at 5:30 p.m.; and a dance with live music will be from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The barbecue is all you can eat for $8 for adults and $5 for those under 12.
