Blooming Trees, Lavender Flowers A Sure Sign That Spring Has Arrived In Rim Country

Today is the first day of spring! A long time ago, back when I was about 7 or 8 years old, I remember my mom telling my brothers and me that that day was the first day of spring.

We were living in upstate New York at the time and I can remember being so excited because in a child’s mind, that meant warm weather and an abundance of flowers. How disappointed I was when I peered out the window and saw nothing but snow. No flowers. Well, spring was a little late in arriving for us that year, but it is one of life’s memories that will always stick in my mind.

Spring has happened in Payson with those beautiful trees all over town that are blooming with those wonderful looking lavender flowers. Tonto Village falls a bit behind because of the higher altitude, but we will catch up in a few weeks.

Hellsgate Fire Department

Janet Snyder, secretary of the Hellsgate Fire Department Auxiliary, Tonto Village station, presented an American flag to fire board chairperson Richard Pinkerton. The flag was donated by the ladies auxiliary to the American Legion Post 69 in Payson. The Fireflies wish to thank the auxiliary president, Cathy Alston, for the generous donation.

The Hellsgate Fire Board held their monthly meeting on March 11 at the Tonto Village fire station, #22. At that meeting, Richard Pinkerton, the fire board president, presented a certificate of completion for EMT training to Chad Stluka of Tonto Village II. Chad’s next goal is to finish the Firefighter I and II courses.

The Fireflies will be holding their first meeting of the new year on April 9, at the Tonto Village station at 10 a.m. The meeting will concentrate on the annual Memorial Weekend breakfast. It will be held at the fire station.

The Fireflies welcomes anyone who would like to volunteer to be a Firefly. Each year the group grows larger with new gals, but they also need help from

the men in the district as well. If you would like more information, contact Firefly president Nancy Yoakum at (928) 478-4370 or vice president Dara Sutton at (928) 478-0052.

Birthdays

Paula Plante of Bear Flat celebrated her birthday on March 18. Hope you had a great day, Paula.

Double D happenings

The nine-ball gals of the Village and Christopher Creek gathered together last Tuesday evening for their weekly game. Ethel Cain shot for first place and runners-up were Judy Tolle and Patty Boeschling of Christopher Creek.

The monthly scotch doubles tournament will be held Friday, March 27. The fun gets started at 6:30 p.m. Make a dish to share and bring a good pool partner.

Domino Divas

If there are a few gals out there who would like to have a fun afternoon, come and join the dominoes group on Wednesday afternoons at 1 p.m. The group is meeting at the Hellsgate fire station in Tonto Village.

Please park in the back lot off of Thompson. The front needs to stay clear for the fire trucks and emergency vehicles. Some of the gals come from Bear Flat, Thompson Draw II and Mead Ranch as well as the Village. Come and have an afternoon of fun and good food.
