Optimists To Hold Fishing Festival At Green Valley Lake

The third annual Optimist Club Fishing Festival will be held March 28 at Green Valley Lake.

The day begins with a breakfast sponsored by the local chapter, where all the proceeds will go to programs for youth in the community, followed by the registration for the day’s fishing activities.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the first 300 children will be given a free fishing hat plus other fishing tackle. The lake will be busy with anglers all day and the festivities will continue until 3 p.m.

Lucky anglers will be able to weigh their fish and photo opportunities will be available to relive the memories of catching a rainbow trout. To see youngsters grinning from ear to ear holding their prize catch, certainly makes the day special.

There will be a double stocking of catchable rainbows with a healthy number of bonus trout also being placed into the lake. This will make it possible to catch a 14- to 20-inch fish which is a trophy rainbow anywhere.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department will have a display where free loaner rods and reels can be checked out, and they will even provide the fishing bait. No licenses will be required for the day providing you have signed up at the department’s registration booth.

The day will be highlighted where numerous raffle prizes will be given away. These will range from tackle, rods and reels, float tubes and a full day of angling on Roosevelt Lake with tournament angler, Tracy Purtee. Other prizes including gift cards and gift certificates from many local businesses will be added. If you are interested in donating any merchandise for the raffle, contact Corey Kroll at 472-3280 or Joan Young at 472-2264.

Music will be provided by KRIM for everyone’s listening enjoyment and they will have live broadcasting from lakeside. Captain John Wisner of Hellsgate Fire Department will also be creating balloon animals for all the children. The entire day will be a true family experience, where the main event is fishing with many other entertaining activities.

If you are looking for an inexpensive family outing and possibly learning a few tips on catching rainbow trout, then the 3rd Annual Optimist Fishing Festival at Green Valley Lake on March 28 is the perfect destination. Bring your friends and join in the fun of catching fish and swapping stories of the one that got away. This weekend, enjoy the outdoors, God’s creation.
