Know a teen who is looking for something to do this Saturday, March 21? Well, if’n you do, hog-tie the little bugger and bring ’em on over to the American Legion Hall on Route 260 between the hours of 7 and 10 p.m. The Overachievers, one of this year’s family and friends Relay for Life teams, will be hosting a Spring Fling Teen Dance.
In addition to giving teens a safe and fun place to hang out on a Saturday night, all the money collected from this hip hoppin’ evening will be donated to the American Cancer Society, which will benefit cancer research and fund Rim Country programs for cancer patients. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.
In addition to great music, there will be lots and lots of door and raffle prizes, courtesy of area merchants.
I feel blessed to have been asked to DJ for this fun event. I’m looking forward to spinning the hottest hits on this week’s Billboard pop, country and Latin charts. Teens can dance to Rihanna, Katy Perry, Flo Rida, Taylor Swift, Flex and many more of their favorite singers — or they can just come and enjoy listening to today’s music and hanging out with their friends.
This week’s music trivia question features the latest, hot new singer on the pop charts — Lady Gaga. In January of this year, her debut release, “Just Dance,” soared to No. 1 on Billboard’s pop chart and stayed on top for six consecutive weeks. Her follow-up song, “Poker Face,” is currently skyrocketing up the chart.
Lady Gaga is a theatrical dance-pop singer/songwriter/ pianist who was influenced by flamboyant rockers such as David Bowie and Queen as well as ’80s dance-pop artists Madonna and Michael Jackson. She grew up in Manhattan, where she attended private school at the Convent of the Sacred Heart and later studied at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She sings with a beat and liveliness that I personally enjoy.
This week’s music trivia question is: Can you name Lady Gaga’s real name? Is it A) Nicole Scherzinger, B) Alicia Moore, C) Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta or D) Linda Sprague?
Contest rules are just a little different this week as only teenagers are allowed to call in — though teens are allowed to seek help from their mom, dad, grandma and grandpa. With that said, if you are the first teenager to call in with the correct answer, you’ll win a spectacular teen prize — two movie passes, courtesy of the Sawmill Theatres, a large pizza from Domino’s Pizza and a six pack of Dilly Bars donated by Dairy Queen. Good luck, teens!
Now, let’s check out how we did with last week’s music trivia question, which was: Can you name the jazz-oriented rock band that got its start in the late 1960s and recorded the hit, “Saturday In The Park?” The group’s three No. 1 hits were: “If You Leave Me Now” (1976), “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” (1982) and “Look Away” (1988).
Was this multitalented group A) Chicago, B) Bay City Rollers C) Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels or D) Charlene Hunt & The Payson Parkettes? The right answer was A) Chicago.
The Bay City Rollers were a pop-rock group in the mid 1970s and Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels recorded during the mid to late 1960s. Charlene Hunt is the special events coordinator for Payson’s Parks and Recreation Department.
Congratulations to this past week’s music trivia winner (and first-time caller), Patty Rockwell.
Patty was born in Arkansas, but moved to Wickenburg when she was very young. After living in a number of different southern Arizona communities, she moved to Pine in 1999.
Patty’s interests are making jewelry, computers and gardening. She donates her time as secretary of the Payson Art League.
Seven years ago, while participating in a craft show in Christopher Creek, Patty met area resident John (locally known as “Wood-Cutter John”), who stopped by her booth. Patty lovingly recalls that their first date was an excursion into the woods to gather wood for John’s business. (Apparently, it was love at first “chop,” as the couple has now been married for six years.)
Patty related that she listens mostly to classic country music and her favorite artists are Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton.
Lastly, new pictures that have been added to my Web site are from this past Saturday’s family and friends party in Pine, hosted by the always gracious and generous Sally Randall.
