The Payson Longhorns will enjoy a rare home course advantage March 30 when the linksters host region teams in a nine-hole match at Chaparral Pines. Tee time is 2:30 p.m.
The clash is one of only two home meets the golf team has on its 2009 schedule.
The Horns tuned up for the upcoming match March 21 in an 18-hole multi-meet on the par 72 Mt. Graham Golf Course near Safford.
There, Payson posted a 338 to finish in fourth place behind Safford (308), Desert Christian (306) and defending state team champion Snowflake (293).
Foreign exchange student Filip Frojd led the Longhorn charge with an 80.
With an 84, freshman Tyler Apps was second among the Horn contingent. Also representing Payson were Mason Dacanay (85), Cody Waterman (89) and Anthony Smith (89).
On March 11, the team battled cold, winds and showers at Silver Creek, near Show Low, to win a three-way stroke play match against Winslow and Show Low.
The Horns posted a 185, Winslow carded a 189 and the host Cougars trailed at 193.
Winslow’s Kalup Baha scored a 40, on the par 35 course, to finish as low medalist.
Apps paced Payson with a 41.
A day prior to traveling to Silver Creek, the Longhorns hosted a four-way match on Rim Golf Club’s par 35 course.
Powerful Snowflake dominated play, finishing first at 155.
With a 182, the Longhorns finished as silver medalists.
Blue Ridge (198) and Show Low (241) trailed.
Individually, Snowflake’s defending state individual champion Kyle Jones, only a sophomore, took top honors at 36. Cody Waterman tallied a 41 to lead Payson.
