Lack Of Moisture Has Left The Forest Dry — Be Careful

Judie Desrochers, treasurer of the Hellsgate Fireflies Auxiliary, has donated a quilt that was made at the Shoofly Quilting Retreat. The raffle will be held at the Labor Day barbecue Saturday, Sept. 5 in Tonto Village.

Although this is springtime and Mother Nature is getting ready to show off her colors with all the flowers and the lilacs sprouting their great smelling blooms, a worrisome time is growing near.

As you may know, there has not been any measurable rainfall in quite a while. The lack of moisture is a dangerous time for our ponderosa pine forest. An example of the dryness and the likelihood of fire is now happening near Pine. At the last count, this fire has consumed about 100 acres and is human-caused.

If you have relatives who will be visiting you, pass the word on about how volatile the forest is at this time of year and that they need to limit their desire to make huge bonfires without any concern for how dangerous this may be. Visitors need to be cautioned about leaving a campfire burning.

Make sure they know they need to drown the fire and cover it with dirt before they leave the campsite. Let’s all of us be cognizant of the danger of fire and help out each other to be fire wise.

The Tonto Village Water Improvement District will hold its monthly meeting May 5 at the Hellsgate Fire Station #22 in Tonto Village in the meeting room. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. The meetings are always open to the public and your comments are welcome.

The Hellsgate Fireflies of Tonto Village will be holding their meeting May 7 at station #22 in the Village. The meeting is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

Under discussion will be the finalization of the preparation for the annual pancake breakfast on Memorial Day weekend, May 23. The Fireflies will serve breakfast between 7:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The menu consists of sausage, eggs, biscuits and gravy, juice and coffee for $5 for adults, $3 for kids.

Something new is being added this year with a yard sale in the front of the fire station.

The Fireflies are looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to dress up in a chicken suit and hold a sign advertising the breakfast. The volunteer will receive a free breakfast and a Fireflies T-shirt. Call Janet Snyder at 478-4575 if you would like to have a bit of fun and a free meal.
