Bass Tourney Showcases Roosevelt Lake

Payson and Northern Gila County took a major step in showcasing Roosevelt Lake as one of the best bass fisheries in the West, by hosting the FLW Stren bass fishing tournament, a couple of weeks ago.

This was no easy task, but with tremendous volunteer support in time and services, a small mountain town out in the middle of nowhere raised a lot of eyebrows in corporate America and FLW Outdoors.

The key question was, “Can a small population center host a major bass fishing event?”

When this challenge was given to a small group of visionaries, the wheels began turning in creating a showcase event.

Understanding that a project of this nature called for a true team effort, many individuals from the area were encouraged to share their leadership skills and talents.

The key to the success of this endeavor was that there were no super-egos that had to be fed. There was just a lot of hard work of identifying talents, devising a game plan, and completing the overall task.

Jim Goughnour, who used his talents as a retired project manager for Motorola in keeping the team focused on the details of the bass tournament, chaired the weekly meetings and updates.

There is no doubt that every issue was well thought out because of Jim’s leadership during the committee discussions. His unique talent of keeping the meetings running smoothly and on task assisted the team in making every self-imposed deadline.

With every meeting a new challenge was met by one of the Payson area businesses, which created an ever-expanding list of local sponsors.

This FLW bass fishing tournament, which was a tremendous economic boost to our area, could not have been a reality without these participating sponsors.

The thanks go to: Hostess, Pepsi, Rim Country Custom Rods and Repairs, Mazatzal Hotel and Casino, Walmart, Community Securities Services, Payson Concrete, Roy Haught Excavating, ERA, the Payson Roundup, Town of Payson, KMOG, Chili’s, El Rancho, Chapman Auto Center, Roadrunner Disposal, Tonto Basin Disposal, Good Samaritan Society Majestic Rim, Highway 188 Tackle & Supply, Arizona Respiratory Services, C&M Communications, Just For You in Tonto Basin, Tonto Basin Chamber of Commerce, Sunstate Equipment of Payson, Southwest Ranger Boats and The Tackle Box, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Frito Lay, Iron Horse Signs, Neumann Paint, Tonto National Forest Payson and Roosevelt Ranger districts, Brooks and Yoder Band and Payson Paint and Supplies.

Let’s continue the process of making the Payson area the hub of competitive bass fishing and cold-water trout angling.

This weekend, enjoy the many fishing opportunities in God’s creation.
