Idle street crews will keep the parks tidy, firefighters will mostly answer medical calls, town planners will try to keep busy despite empty “in” boxes, recreation programs will rehire seasonal workers — and Payson workers generally will eke out another year.

Recently, I had the experience of observing the Payson Police Department, Gila County Search and Rescue, and the Department of Public Safety “Ranger” search helicopter, all work as a team to locate an endangered lost person. I was impressed.

Pine, Arizona has had a water problem dating back as far as 1958. That was one reason we never bought there and the greed of the real estate groups and land owners now have Pine with twice as many hookups as they can support on their water system.

As a 20-plus year Payson resident, I feel strongly about seeing such a lovely and lucrative improvement all the way down Main Street and I would like to offer a suggestion.

The Fool’s Day Fun — Stop Underage Drinking event was again a huge success for the Community Prevention Council in Payson. This event encourages parents to “Start talking before they start drinking.” The primary purpose of this event is to combat underage drinking and to educate parents, youth and others on the issue of alcohol abuse.

Pinyon needle scale eggs have already hatched in southeast Payson and Trailwood, Beaver Valley Estates and Round Valley. The immature scales “crawlers” have emerged from the egg state and have attached themselves to the needles on the ends of the branches.

SV may annex another 12 square miles

Nurturing dreams of long-term growth and expansion, the Star Valley town council will discuss annexing 12 square miles of Forest Service land east of town. The annexation would increase the town size by 50 percent and possibly secure additional water sources.
