Although the tournament was played in a foursome format, the winning team had only three members.
They included Jared Proch, Steve Vincent and Jim Dagleish who won the “select drive, three drives each” Payson Men’s Golf Association tournament contested May 13 at Payson Golf Course.
The undermanned trio carded a 155 to out-duel the runner-up foursome of Buddy Morris, Frank Karnes, Herb Sherman and Ward Johnson. That team finished at 157.
Also with a 157, but in third place on a tiebreaker, was the team of Ed Flores, Jack Greenshield, Van Bowman and Ross Robertson.
The only members of the top three teams who also pocketed closest-to-the-pin prize money were Karnes and Flores.
Karnes was closest on No. 14 where his tee shot rolled to within 4 feet of the flag. With a lie of 2 feet, 4 inches, Flores won on No. 17.
Other closest-to-the-pin winners were Larry Baker, No. 2, 16 feet, 3 inches; Mike Curtis, No. 5, 7 feet, 10 inches; and Jim Livingston, 21 feet, 7 inches.
Next up for the PMGA members is a “four man reverse poker” tournament May 27 at PGC. Among the highlights of the links season will be the association’s two-man best ball tournament to be played in two rounds on June 10 and 17.
