Homeless Summit

Homelessness in the Rim Country will be discussed at a special meeting from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12 at the board room of the Payson Unified School District, 902 W. Main St. Presented by the district and Southwest Behavioral Health Services, topics on the agenda include housing; health care; education and child care; employment; social services; and daily living. Blessing House Boutique

Blessing House Boutique and rummage sale will be held the mornings of Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7 at Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane. Holiday Open House

Several shops in Pine will take part in the 11th Annual Holiday Open House from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7. Participants include Tymeless Antiques and Treasures, Moose Mountain, Our House, Gingerbread House, Pine Country Antiques & Vintage, Pine By Design, Visions Speaking Rock Shop Emporium, The Quilt Shop, and Pine Yarn Shop.

Celebrate fall at First Friday

The First Friday celebration for November will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6 on old Main Street in Payson.

Many of the participating merchants will have special scarecrows on display for the Second Annual Scarecrow Contest, which will benefit the Payson area drive to supply the food banks in the Rim Country.

Community Presbyterian Church’s Community Child Learning Center’s Pre-K (4- and 5-year-olds) class is sponsoring a dinner and having an “art” auction.  The menu is spaghetti, salad, roll and drink for $5 a meal (eat in or take out). There will also be a silent art auction for work by the children. All of the money raised from the dinner and auction will be used by the Pre-K youngsters to adopt Payson children off the Angel Tree for their Christmas community service project. The dinner and auction will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Also for First Friday, Green Mountain Emporium will have a grand opening celebration for its new location (next door to its old site).

Help the Humane Society

Join the gathering at Bootleg Alley Antiques & Art and “Fall into the Magic of Main Street.” Enjoy dinner and dessert while listening to Cindy and Lupe of Sounds Unlimited. The event will support two Humane Society fund-raisers. The event is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6 at Bootleg Alley Antiques & Art, 520 W. Historic Main Street.

Free latex paint disposal

Buckhead Mesa Landfill will have a free latex paint drop-off day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7.

Brush drop locations

This coming weekend, the Regional Payson Area Project for a Fire Wise Rim Country will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting: Only vegetative debris is permitted.

• Saturday, Nov. 7, the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Blattner Pit is located at milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson.

• Sunday, Nov. 8 the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.

Models needed

The Pine-Strawberry Senior Center, 3916 N. Highway 87, Pine, is looking for persons to model clothing in its Nov. 14 fashion show. Models from sizes 4 to 2X are needed. In addition to the fashion show there will be a silent auction of gift items. Homemade finger foods will be available for purchase throughout the event. There is no charge for admission. Christmas Shoppe opens

The Senior Thrift Store will have a grand opening of the 2009 Christmas Shoppe in the back yard of the store, 512 W. Main St., Saturday, Nov. 7. The store is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. All proceeds benefit the Senior Center and its programs for the elderly of the community.

PHS students collecting food

Payson High School’s DECA chapter is conducting a can drive to benefit St. Vincent de Paul. From 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 7, high school students will go door-to-door to collect cans of food. A drop-off place will also be available at Safeway. The goal is 300 cans. Already, the club has donated $100 to help families buy turkeys this Thanksgiving.

Health and Care Fair

The 11th Annual Community Health and Care Fair is from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Payson High School “old gym.” Free admission to the Health Fair allows participants the opportunity to enjoy and learn from more than 32 exhibits and participate in free screenings like bone density and low-cost blood tests. AARP Driver Safety Class

An AARP Driver safety class will be held at the Senior Circle, 215 N. Beeline Highway, from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7. This is a four-hour classroom refresher for motorists age 50 and older who have years of driving experience. Payment of the $14 fee must be by check or money order. AARP members will receive a $2 discount with their membership card. Bring your driver’s license. Enrollment is limited; call (928) 468-1012 to register or for more information.


The Birth of Rock ’n’ Roll

The Isabelle Hunt Memorial Library will feature special guest speaker Ray Baxter on Saturday, Nov. 7 in the activity room.  Baxter will be discussing the Birth of Rock ’n’ Roll. The split session runs from 10 a.m. until noon and then resumes at 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. A $10 per person fee is requested to help fund the library computer lab maintenance fees. Payson Area Habitat for Humanity dedication

Payson Area Habitat for Humanity will have a dedication ceremony for Phase II of Longhorn Village from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 8. The event will begin with a welcome and dedication ceremony and then the homes will be open to tour. Refreshments will be provided.
