Parks & Rec Has Plenty Of Fall Programs


Early registration for the Turkey Trot 3.1-mile fitness run — beginning and finishing at Green Valley Park — has closed, but those interested can still enter for a $25 fee (there is no guarantee T-shirts will be available for late registrants). The race is Saturday, Nov. 21, with check-in at 8 a.m. and start at 9 a.m. Check at the parks office in Green Valley Park or call (928) 474-5242, ext. 7 for details.

Adult Flag Football

The teams participating in the parks department’s adult flag football league are finishing up the season with a tournament, which started Nov. 4. The teams participating were El Rancho Raiders and Almaboss, who both had byes the first weekend; PRMC and Gibson’s Crew, with Gibson’s Crew winning; Expedition and Benchwarmers, with Expedition winning. Now, Nov. 11, El Rancho Raiders and Gibson’s Crew will play at 6:30 p.m. and Expedition and Almaboss will play at 7:30 p.m. Winners in the two Nov. 11 games will play at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 18 for the Payson Bowl Championship. Losers of the two Nov. 11 games will meet either PRMC or Benchwarmers on Nov. 18. The PRMC game is at 7:30 p.m. and the Benchwarmer game is at 8:30 p.m. The winners of these two games will meet for the Pizza Bowl Championship at 7 p.m., Nov. 20.

Adult Coed Volleyball

The two leagues in Adult Coed Volleyball (competitive and recreation) are about halfway through the season. Games started Oct. 26 and continue through Nov. 19.

The competitive league plays on Mondays and Wednesdays, with the recreation league playing Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The competitive league includes Garvin’s Towing, Get Down, Paradise Nails, Red and Wingin’ It. The recreation league has In Yo Face, Off the Wall, PRMC and Volleyball Junkies. The games are all played at the Rim Country Middle School gym at 7:15 p.m., 8 p.m. and 8:45 p.m.

Junior High Basketball

The parks and rec Junior High Basketball program, for players in the seventh- and eighth-grades, started Oct. 31. The teams playing call themselves the Boston Celtics, L.A. Lakers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Phoenix Suns. Play is at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon on Saturdays at the Rim Country Middle School gym. There will be no play the Saturday of the Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 28.

A tournament is planned for Dec. 19, with an awards program immediately following.

Younger children are also playing basketball now. The Start Smart Basketball program is at 1:15 p.m., Saturdays at the middle school gym, followed by Biddy Basketball at 2:30 p.m.

Group hike

The will be a group hike of the Event Center and Peach Orchard Trails from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 14. The 4-mile one-way route is moderately difficult, but includes breathtaking views of the Mazatzal Mountain Range, a trip through a shady riparian area and passes by an old homestead. There is no fee. Meet at the Event Center Trailhead at the southwest corner of the Payson Event Center. There will be a shuttle at the Peach Orchard Trailhead to return participants to their vehicles at the Event Center.

There will be another group hike Saturday, Dec. 12. The free event will traverse the Cypress and Boulders Loop Trails, starting at 9 a.m. and scheduled to conclude at 11:30 a.m.. Meet at the Cypress Trail access, two miles east at the end of Phoenix Street, off Highway 87. Call the above number for more.
