There seems to be some misunderstanding in the community regarding an item on the Payson Unified School District Governing Board agenda; specifically a discussion regarding a position of assistant superintendent. I would like to clarify the reasoning behind this request.
In most businesses, there is a succession plan for continued operations should the president, CEO, CFO or manager become unwilling or unable to fulfill his or her duties. Having addressed this issue previously with the district, I thought it wise to discuss and designate a person responsible for these duties should the need arise.
The position of superintendent is unique in that it encompasses educational, legal, financing and management skills. It was never my intention to simply add an additional position, but to point out this gap when making future personnel decisions and to look at the possibility of combining several current positions into one, thus saving the district money and providing a succession plan.
Discussions by the board are strictly that, open communications of current and future needs by all members to identify the best means of keeping our schools strong, viable and educationally sound. Clearly the district is under severe financial strain and the time is not right to start making changes in these uncertain times. This was specifically noted at the meeting.
