One of the Rim Country’s most accomplished all-around athletes sped his way to a first-place finish in the Turkey Trot 5K.

Carlos Lopez, 21, won the town-sponsored race — held Nov. 21 at Green Valley Park — in a time of 16:52.

Although the clocking was easily the fastest of all those who competed, it didn’t satisfy Lopez.

“The elevation in Payson gets to me now,” he said. “I was really huffing and puffing.”

He called the toughest portion of the 3.1-mile loop the return to starting line from the midway point near the county sanitary plant, “that’s more uphill than the rest of the course.”

The Turkey Trot victory was the third consecutive for Lopez who won it last year in 16:51.

Last summer, Lopez finished second in the Town of Payson Sprint Triathlon in a time of 1:07.59, which was just .02 seconds off the winning pace of Ross Decker.

In January, Lopez will enroll at the University of North Carolina at Asheville where he will become a member of the school’s track and field and cross country teams.

Currently, Lopez is taking classes at Scottsdale Community College and is a volunteer assistant coach for the school’s cross country team.

After graduating from Payson High in 2007, Lopez enrolled at SCC where he helped Scottsdale run to a seventh-place finish in the NJCAA Region 1 cross country championships.

The following year, he was a member of the Fighting Artichokes’ cross-country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams and set the school’s 1,500-meter record of 4:19.08. That year, he was also the No. 1 runner on the cross-country team.

In high school, Lopez was one of the state’s finest cross country runners, a member of the Longhorn track and field team that won the 2006 state championship and a standout on the 2006-2007 state runner-up basketball team.

The female Turkey Trot champion, Sabrina Nelson, won the competition in 21:15. She was entered in the 20-29 age division.
