Saturday Should Be ‘A Good Day To Run’

The Rim Country Challenge half marathon, 5K and youth fun runs are this Saturday.

Do you live on the west side of the Beeline Highway in Payson? If you do, there is a good chance that if you look out of your front window early this Saturday morning, you will see a horde of sweaty, gasping-for-air athletes sprinting by your house.

Starting at 8 a.m., Payson Area Habitat for Humanity will host its annual Rim Country Challenge Half Marathon, 5K and youth fun runs. All races will start and finish at Green Valley Park.

Runners in the 5K (three-mile) run will be jogging their way through Payson’s westside neighborhoods, while those who opt for the half marathon (13 miles), will be running north on McLane Road, then they will tackle the monster hill on Airport Road to the west. (Whew — just driving my motorcycle up that incline makes me puff!)

As I look at the extended forecast for Saturday, I see that race day Saturday should be “A Good Day to Run.”

And that brings me to this week’s music trivia question: Can you name the contemporary country music artist who sang the 2001 hit “A Good Day To Run?”

This singer, songwriter, guitarist grew up in Pyburn, Tenn., the son of a father who left his job at a local paper company to become a Methodist preacher and a mother who was a featured singer in the church choir.

This artist became a hard-working, yet rebellious young man, earning a degree in biology with a minor in organic chemistry, while drinking bootlegged whiskey and partying at local honky tonks.

While holding various jobs, including a stint as a teacher, this country artist played clubs on the weekends and occasional weeknights.

Determined to make it big in the recording industry, he even broke his engagement to become a full-time performer and songwriter.

To date, he has 13 country billboard charted hits to his credit, including his three No. 1 hits, “I Miss My Friend,” “Awful, Beautiful Life” and “Have You Forgotten?” which topped Billboard’s country chart for seven consecutive weeks in 2003.

Is this country musician A) Darryl Worley, B) Keith Urban, C) Gary Allan or D) Chris Royer?

Now, let’s check and see how we did with last week’s question, which was: Can you name the country music artist who recorded the 1969 hit, “Homecoming?”

Is this “Homecoming” artist A) Roy Clark, B) Waylon Jennings, C) Tom T. Hall or D) Matt Mayo?

The correct answer was Tom T. Hall.

Roy Clark and Waylon Jennings were also very popular country recording artists who produced many hits in the same time period as Hall.

Matt Mayo is Payson High School’s varsity head football coach, who guided our Longhorns to an impressive 42-7 homecoming win last Friday night, sending all of us loyal PHS fans home with big smiles on our faces.

Congratulations to this past week’s music trivia winner, Marlenea La Shomb.

Marlenea was born in Springfield, Mass. At 4 years of age, she moved with her family to Phoenix. When she was 15, she relocated to Bozeman, Mont., where she later raised four beautiful children. In January of this year, she moved to Payson to be near her father.

Marlenea is an amazing woman who dons many hats here in Payson. She is a cosmetologist at Merlinda’s Hair Salon, a floral designer at Payson Florist and Gifts and operates her own business, “Musically Lively Massage.” She also recently became certified from Gila Community College as a personal trainer.

In her spare time, Marlenea enjoys hiking, dancing and outdoor sports and activities. She volunteers as a certified cosmetologist for Senior Circle’s Look Good, Feel Good program for cancer patients and is a board member and treasurer for Payson Center for Spiritual Awareness.

Marlenea has an eclectic taste in music, but particularly enjoys listening to both new and classic country. She lists George Strait, Connie Francis, Lynyrd Skynyrd and John Denver as her favorite artists.

A very generous person, Marlenea has donated this week’s music trivia prize — a complementary haircut at her station in Merlinda’s Hair Salon on the Beeline Highway. Be caller number five, have the right answer and I will give you that gift certificate.

Take it from me, Marlenea will give you the clip job of your life!
