Guillermo Lopez (left) of the Payson Longhorns, leaps into the air as he attempts to keep a Holbrook player from advancing the ball downfield during a tense and controversial Saturday, Oct. 3 match at Rumsey Park.
The Longhorn soccer team, still reeling from the loss of four starters, was upset 2-1 by the Holbrook Roadrunners Oct. 3 at Rumsey Park.
Holbrook’s win was a bit of revenge in that, earlier this season, the Horns whipped the Runners 5-4 in Holbrook.
In Saturday’s game, both teams scored a single goal in the first stanza, but in the second, Holbrook tallied what proved to be the winning goal, while PHS was scoreless.
On Sept. 30 in Eagar-Springerville, Payson fell 6-4 to the Round Valley Elks.
According to MaxPreps standings, Payson is now 1-2 in East region play and 2-4 overall.
Blue Ridge leads the East chase with a 2-0 region record, 6-1 overall.
Show Low is 2-0 and 4-1.
Payson has been playing recently without Shawn Hilgendorf, Bubba Nielson and Matt Bullard, who are all sidelined with broken legs.
Earlier this season, goalie Ben Rogers suffered a concussion, but has since rejoined the team.
The Horns return to action tomorrow, Oct. 7, against the Show Low Cougars at Rumsey Park. Game times are 4 p.m. (JV) and 6 p.m. (varsity).

Question of the week
Do you think new Principal Anna Van Zile has a valid idea in eliminating the Asst. Principal and replacing it with an Athletic Director position that would share her duties as Principal?
