Have you ever thought you’d like to try something new — something outside of your comfort zone, something really different from your everyday routine?
Well, have I got something for you!
Last week, Marlenea La Shomb, hair stylist at Merlinda’s Hair Salon, donated a free haircut as our music trivia prize.
In chatting with Marlenea, I discovered that not only is she a top-notch cosmetologist, she is also a certified, licensed massage therapist who specializes in a unique, new-age type of massage — referred to as “Musically Lively Massage.”
Being a music lover (and an “easy-sale” kind of guy), Marlenea had little trouble convincing me that what I needed in my life right now was to experience this new, cutting-edge “music massage.”
Well, let me tell you, 15 minutes on Marlenea’s massage chair was just out of this world! With my headphones on, I experienced “River Dance” as I would have never imagined. All I could say when the music ended and Marlenea’s hands left my body was, “I’ve Got the Music in Me!”
Now — for this week’s music trivia question. Can you tell me the recording artist of the 1974 hit, “I’ve Got the Music in Me”?
This female artist was born Pauline Matthews on March 6, 1947 in Bradford, England.
From 1971 through 1976, she charted five Billboard hits, including her popular duet with Elton John, “Don’t go Breaking My Heart.”
Is this pop-rock singer A) Helen Reddy, B) Petula Clark, C) Kiki Dee or D) Janis Joplin?
Be caller number three and have the right answer and you’ll win a gift certificate for your very own “Musically Lively Massage,” courtesy of Marlenea. You’re just gonna love it!
Now, let’s check and see how we did with last week’s question, which was: Can you name the contemporary country music artist who sang the 2001 hit “A Good Day to Run”?
To date, this artist has 13 country billboard charted hits to his credit, including his three No. 1 hits, “I Miss My Friend,” “Awful, Beautiful Life” and “Have You Forgotten?,” which topped Billboard’s country chart for seven consecutive weeks in 2003.
Is this country musician A) Darryl Worley, B) Keith Urban, C) Gary Allan or D) Chris Royer?
The correct answer was Darryl Worley.
Keith Urban and Gary Allan are also very popular and successful hot new country music artists.
Chris Royer is Payson Habitat for Humanity’s bubbly and gregarious director. (Habitat was the organizer and benefactor of last week’s half-marathon run.)
Congratulations to this past week’s music trivia winner, Kathy Orr (no relation to hockey legend Bobby Orr.)
Kathy was born in Lawrence, Mass. When she was 6 years old, she moved with her family to California.
Kathy told me that she is married to a wonderful man, Ron, who she met a quarter century ago in the Sunnydale (California) Bowling Lanes. They were both members of the “High Rollers” league (180-plus average per game).
Apparently it was love at first strike, as Ron soon asked her to join him on their first “official” date at (where else?) Sunnydale Bowling Alley!
Kathy related that after the last frame of the night, the couple had coffee and chatted until two in the morning. Then, following a slow stroll to her car and a goodnight hug, Kathy says, “I knew I was on my way!” The couple has been married for 23 years.
Kathy and Ron are now retired and enjoying the good life. Their primary home is in El Mirage, but they have recently purchased a “fifth wheel” in the Lamplighter RV Park in Star Valley, where they enjoy “the most beautiful country I have ever seen.”
Kathy’s interests include beading, T-shirt design and Sudoku puzzles. She enjoys Indian flute, classic country and rock ’n’ roll music from the 1950s and ’60s. Her favorite artists are George Jones, the Chi-Lites and Otis Redding.
Just a final note on Kathy — she is quite an accomplished bowler, having recorded a 300 game and 700 series.
Two last things: New pictures I have added to my Web site are from this past Saturday’s Kyle (a 2000 graduate of Payson High School) and Sarah Conway’s wedding reception. The young couple was supported by the over 200 guests who filled the Tonto Apache gymnasium.
If you are not lucky enough to win this week’s trivia prize, a “Musically Lively Massage,” you can contact Marlenea at jumpstartyourhealth.com. (Men, this would make a great surprise gift for your loved one!)
Have a musically lively week!
