Colder Weather Brings Campground Closings

The cooler weather has arrived on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, and many of the campgrounds are closing due to freezing temperatures and lack of accessibility because most of the roads in the high country are not plowed. The following is a schedule for the status of the campgrounds.

Black Mesa Ranger District

Rim campground is closed. Black Canyon Rim campground closed Oct. 15. Mogollon campground is open until the end of October.

Knoll Lake campground is open until Oct. 31. Spillway, Aspen and Crook campgrounds are open until winter weather makes them inaccessible.

Sinkhole campground will remain open until winter weather makes it inaccessible. Water services will be available until the first week of Novemebr; trash services are not available.

Canyon Point campground will have a portion of its sites open until winter weather makes it inaccessible. Water and trash services will be available until late October; thereafter, there will be a minmal fee to camp.

Chevelon Lake and Chevelon Crossing campgrounds will remain open until winter weather makes them inaccessible. There are no water or trash services and there is no fee to camp.

Lakeside Ranger District

Lewis Canyon campground is closed.

Lakeside campground closes Oct. 31; all services are available until then. Scotts Reservoir campground closes Nov. 1. Water services are not provided at all and trash services will not be available during October.

Los Burros campground will remain open until winter weather makes it inaccessible and the bathrooms will close just before the first major snow storm of the season arrives. There are no water or trash services and there is no fee to camp.

Fool Hollow Lake campground is open year-round with all services available.

Alpine Ranger District

Luna Lake campground closed Oct. 15.

All campgrounds on the East Fork of the Black River (Diamond Rock, Deer Creek, Horse Springs, Aspen, Raccoon and Buffalo Crossing) are open until winter weather makes them inaccessible. After October 15, water and trash services will not be available and there will be no fee to camp.

Caldwell Cabin closes Nov. 10.

Alpine Divide, Upper Blue, Blue Crossing, West Fork, Hannagan, and K.P. campgrounds are open until winter weather makes them inaccessible. There are no water or trash services available and there is no fee to camp.

Springerville district

Rainbow campground is closed. Apache, South Fork and Winn campgrounds closed Oct. 15. Grayling, Brookchar and Cutthroat campgrounds will close Nov. 1.

Benny Creek and Hoyer campgrounds will close in late October.

Gabaldon campground will remain open until winter weather makes it inaccessible. There are no water or trash services available and no fee to camp.

Clifton Ranger District — All campgrounds (Blackjack, Coal Creek, Granville, Honeymoon, Lower and Upper Juan Miller and Strayhorse) will remain open until winter weather makes them inaccessible and there is no fee to camp. Water is not currently available at Granville campground; however, it is available at Strayhorse campground until colder temperatures set in and the water system is turned off. All other campgrounds do not have any water services; trash services are not available at any of these campgrounds.
