‘Roads Scholars’ at library

The Library Friends of Payson will feature a guest from the Arizona Humanities Council “Roads Scholars” Speakers Bureau at the next meeting.

At 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, a brief business meeting will be held, followed by author Gregory McNamee’s presentation on the history of Arizona place names, with lively anecdotes that bring to life the little-known stories behind names on the land.

Business Buzz

The next Business Buzz meeting is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22 at the Payson Airport (Ramp C, Hangar #2).

The meeting will feature a special presentation on the Payson Regional Airport with Jon Barber discussing the master plan, Gary Spragins with a look to the future, and comments by the board members of the Payson Regional Airport Authority.

The cost is $10 for members and $12 for guests. Make reservations with the chamber, (928) 474-4515. The event is co-sponsored by the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and Northern Gila County Economic Development Corporation.

Majestic Rim celebration

The Good Samaritan Society – Majestic Rim is celebrating Cruisin’ Back to the ’50s to help celebrate lowering the minimum age requirement for residents to 55. The event is at 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct., 22 at 310 E. Tyler Parkway. There will be tours, refreshments and music. Reserve a spot by calling (928) 474-3912. 

Alternatives for wellness

Gila Community College is presenting a series of seminars that address alternative approaches to overall wellness. The next program in the series is at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22 on the topic of Ayurveda - Rejuvenation and Life-Extension with Tony Alfano.

Ayurveda is the ancient and contemporary study and philosophy of “Healing and Rejuvenation.”  Attendees will be able to identify their true constitution type and the remedies available to balance mind, body, and spirit, in the rapidly changing dynamics of current living trends.

Alfano’s area of study and training has been acquired over approximately 20 years of teaching and training in the principles of various yoga methods and as the founder of  “The 3 C Yoga” program. He has also written a book on the subject. Proceeds from the book are donated to local Payson charities.  He received additional advanced Ayurveda study and training at the Himalaya Institute founded by the internationally acclaimed Swami Rama.

‘Best of Broadway’

Payson Art League Fall Show

Payson Art League invites the public to this year’s annual Fall Show being held Friday, Oct. 23 through Sunday, Oct. 26 at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino Event Center, on Highway 87 just south of Payson.

The event is free on Saturday and Sunday. For $5, the public is also invited to the gala Friday night premiere from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Benefit breakfast

A breakfast of pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee will be served from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 24 at Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane. Proceeds will benefit Tonto Basin resident Sharon Hewitt. Two weeks ago, Mrs. Hewitt lost everything in a fire that consumed the home she was renting. Winter clothes give-away

Winter clothes will be given away from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Payson Church of Christ, 401 E. Tyler Parkway (across from KMOG). There will be coats, sweatshirts, pants, shirts and more for all sizes, including infants and children.

Rabies clinic

A low-cost rabies clinic is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Main Street Animal Clinic, 411 W. Main St. The shot is $10, licenses for both the town and county will also be sold.

Chili cook-off in Pine

The Pine-Strawberry Senior Center will have a chili cook-off beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Pine Community Center, 3916 N. Highway 87.

There is no charge to enter the competition, however persons interested in participating must pre-register. Entries will be limited to 50. A $3 fee will be charged to sample the various chilies and cast a vote for the favorite.
