Senior Night in Whiteriver didn’t turn out to be much of a treat.
The dismay on an evening that should have been a celebration for those graduating was inflicted by the Payson Longhorns in a 62-0 thrashing of the Falcons.
The outcome of the East region clash was never much in doubt as Payson took a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter expanded it to 28-0 minutes later. On the last play of the first stanza, Payson Herring returned a punt 50-plus yards for a TD to give the Horns a 35-0 lead. At the end of the third quarter, Payson led 49-0.
Both teams were playing with several reserves in key spots due to injuries suffered during the past few weeks.
With the win, Payson improves to 3-6 overall,1-3 in the East, and lifts the team out of the region cellar, a spot it had been sitting in all season long. Payson closes out its year Oct. 30 in PHS stadium against the Show Low Cougars. Kick off is 7 p.m.
