This is the first quarter of a waxing moon, so fishing at night should be viable under lights. But there is also a transition time from summer to fall activity patterns for the fish. Daytime fishing should become more viable as the days get shorter, the nights get longer, and the lakes start to cool down.

When Joe Harris of the parks and rec department approached me about joining forces to host a junior volleyball camp, I responded, “Sounds great.” When he stated that he felt he could get 30 kids to sign up, I responded, “Really?” but was actually thinking, “Yeah, right.” I had run junior camps before, and had anywhere from nine to 15 kids sign up.

Last May 19, the Payson Roundup carried a remarkable full-page “ad” that began with a letter to me that said: “Dear Don, Your friends, neighbors, and the many people you have touched pray for your speedy recovery …” and included the names of almost 300 friends, family and acquaintances, who were “Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.”

H1N1 in schools: Preparation — not panic

The H1N1 virus is in the news of late and may likely be much more so as we get into the winter months. Now is a good time to look at what we can do together to minimize the impact to students and our schools. We also thought it might be a good idea to invite parents and community members to an information session at our auditorium next week.

In reading the front page article in the Aug. 21 edition of the Payson Roundup, it becomes rather obvious that the Gila Community College (GCC) Governing Board currently has a multifaceted budget challenge. The article also indicates the appearance of a geographic conflict between the northern and southern parts of this county.
Students help build Tonto Basin school

When construction trades teacher Richard Alvarez got a call from Tonto Basin principal Johnny Ketchem asking for help with the reconstruction of the Little Red Schoolhouse in Tonto Basin, he gathered up his classroom of students, jumped in a bus and headed down with hammers and nails in tow.
