Book sale, raffle in Pine

Pine Library Friends will host a Book Sale and Raffle over Labor Day Weekend. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5; and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6.

The sale will be held in the Pine Library Activity Room, located off Highway 87 and Randall Drive behind the Community Center in Pine.

The raffle prize will be an Americana Reading Nook Basket. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and are on sale at the library.

Block party on Main Street

Kick off Labor Day Weekend 2009 with the biggest block party in Payson put on by the Main Street Merchants Guild with the First Friday celebration from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 4.

The event will be held rain or shine and is presented by the Payson Main Street Merchants Guild along with the Payson Regional Economic Development Corporation.

Humane Society fund-raiser

Bootleg Alley Antiques & Art, 520 W. Main St., will host Sounds Unlimited from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 4 along with Chef Gary Bedsworth cooking gourmet brats from Charlie’s Meats.

Once again, visitors can make a contribution to benefit the Humane Society and observe and interact with local artist Conrad Okerwall as he works on his latest painting.

A Rummage Sale will be held from 7 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 4 and Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Nazarene Church, 200 E. Tyler Parkway. Sale items include furniture, tools, antique piano, clothing, home décor, appliances and more.

Proceeds will benefit the Safe Haven Child Development Center.

Payson Farmers Market

PSFD Pancake Breakfast

The Pine-Strawberry Fire Department personnel and members of Strawberry’s Elite will present a pancake breakfast as part of the Labor Day weekend fun in Pine. 

All you can eat pancakes will be served from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Pine Community Center. The cost is $5 per plate and buys all you can eat pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice.

Eat up and enjoy the annual Labor Day Weekend Craft Fair.

Beaver Valley Day

Celebrate Beaver Valley Day Saturday, Sept. 5 in Beaver Valley, 6 miles northeast of Payson on Houston Mesa Road.

Enjoy a day of family fun including food, games for kids and adults, prizes, exhibits, duck race, silent auction, dinner and dancing to live music. A pancake breakfast and firewise education program takes place from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Games, exhibits and other activities are from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., including a barbecue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Proceeds benefit Beaver Valley Fire Department.

At press time, it was not certain whether mop-up of the recent Water Wheel Fire would interfere with plans for Beaver Valley Day. Please call ahead for the latest information, (928) 468-9269.

Hummingbird project needs volunteers statewide

The Arizona State Parks Department, Audubon Arizona and the Hummingbird Monitoring Network are launching an effort to collect scientific information about hummingbird species in Arizona. The project includes regional biodiversity studies and investigation about the distribution and migration of hummingbirds.

Boyce Thompson Arboretum, near Superior, will start its part of the project Saturday, Sept. 5 with a one-hour guided walk to learn about hummingbirds, a lecture and slide show from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The program is free, but admission to the park will be charged.

Hellsgate FD fund-raiser

The Hellsgate Fire Department Auxiliary Fireflies will host a Labor Day Weekend fund-raiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5 at Fire Station 22 in Tonto Village, 151 Mathews Lane (1 mile on Control Road off Highway 260).

The event will include a barbecue meal for $7 adults, $3 kids 10 and under. There will be a bake sale and other activities. A raffle drawing will be held at 2 p.m. for a quilt, a chain saw or a Nintendo Wii. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Entertainment will be provided by D.J. Larry Ellis and Karaoke.

Brush pits closed

For the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend — Saturday, Sept. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 6 — all RPAP pits will be closed, so that our staff and volunteers can spend the weekend with their families.

Due to the Water Wheel Fire, the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department’s Family Fossil and Geode Hunt scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 6, has been postponed.

Buy a bag for $1 and anything that fits in it from the shop’s selection of clothes, shoes, belts and other accessories (except jewelry) and you take it home.

Payson area blood drives

If you are able, plan to make a donation of blood at one of two blood drives planned in the Rim Country next week. A drive will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 8 at the First Baptist Church of Pine, 4039 Highway 87 in Pine. Vendors wanted

The Payson Community Presbyterian Church’s Community Flea Market needs vendors.

The next Flea Market will be in the church parking lot from 7 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept 12. Vendors pay just $10 per 10-foot-by-19 foot space. All sales proceeds are the vendors’ to keep. Space rental fees go toward the Presbyterian Deacons Food Bank.

Quilt Roundup

The Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce announces the 5th Annual Rim Country Quilt Roundup is accepting applications for sponsors, vendors, students and quilt entries for the show, which will be held Nov. 12-15.
