Payson area blood drives

If you are able, plan to make a donation of blood at one of two blood drives planned in the Rim Country next week. A drive will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 8 at the First Baptist Church of Pine, 4039 Highway 87 in Pine. Contact Sheri Earp at (928) 476-3655 to make an appointment or get more details.

Another drive is planned from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the parking lot of Rim Country Health and Retirement Community, 807 W. Longhorn Road. For more information, contact Angela Lyons at (928) 978-1800.

Donors who make a contribution during the month of September will be entered in a raffle to win tickets to the Grand Canyon on the Grand Canyon Railway.

Hospital update

The Citizens Awareness Committee is hosting Chris Wolf, chief executive officer of Payson Regional Medical Center, at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10 at the meeting room of the Payson Public Library.

Wolf will present a hospital update program.

Northern Gila County Fair

The 55th Annual Northern Gila County Fair is this week, Friday, Sept. 11 through Sunday, Sept. 13 at the Payson Event Center and the Tonto Apache Exhibit Hall (gym).

Exhibits open for viewing at 9 a.m., Friday and 10 a.m., Saturday and Sunday at the exhibit hall and close at 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m., Sunday. Fair-goers can view the livestock at the event center until 6 p.m., Saturday.

The 4H Horse Show is at 8 a.m., Friday, Sept. 11 at the event center, with the livestock judging and show at 6 p.m., Saturday under the big tent.

The fair’s open horse show is at 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 12 in the event center arena, with the livestock auction at 5 p.m. under the big tent.

The Northern Gila County Fair festivities will once again conclude with a Demolition Derby at the event center. The contests start at 1:30 p.m., with gates opening at 11:30 a.m.

Pancake breakfast

The Parent Teacher Organization at Julia Randall Elementary School is hosting a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 12 at the school, 902 W. Main, Payson. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. The fee will buy blueberry or plain pancakes and a beverage. During the breakfast, the school will be open for tours.

Plant sale

The Rim Area Gardeners Annual Fall Plant Sale will be from 7 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 12 at Vita Mart in the Twin Pines Shopping Center. House plants and perennials, along with seeds and gardening craft items will be offered.

Benefit dance, auction

The Humane Society of Central Arizona with the Junction 87 band is holding a night of dancing, along with both silent and live auctions from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Mazatzal Casino. Tickets can be purchased for $5 at the door or in advance at the Humane Society, 812 S. McLane or at the Humane Society of Central Arizona Thrift Store, 404 W. Main St., Payson.

The Humane Society of Central Arizona dance is being made possible by the generosity of sponsors Hospice Compassus, CJ Excavating, Payson Care Center and Western Village. Anyone interested in sponsoring or donating to the auction can contact Kathleen Hughes at (928) 474-3808.

Craft Fair Sept. 12-13

Ponderosa Chapter #64, Order of the Eastern Star, will be having its 4th Annual Craft Fair Sept. 12 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 200 E. Rancho Road. There will be a wide assortment of vendors, including many different hand-crafted items, jewelry, sandals, fudge, area rugs and much more. Hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks will be available. There also will be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Come and enjoy the fun.

Community Vegetarian Luncheon

Letting people know that “healthy food can be delicious” is the purpose of our monthly luncheons. This month the luncheon will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12 at The Meeting Place, at the corner of Phoenix Street and Highway 87, at the south end of town.

There is no cost and all are invited, but it is important to RSVP to Shirley at 595-1528 as soon as possible so that we can be sure of having enough food! Regular attendees also need to RSVP.

Benefit golf tourney

Payson Community Christian School will be conducting its annual benefit golf tournament Sunday, Sept. 13 at the Chaparral Pines Golf Course. The shotgun start will be at 12:30 p.m. Participants will have dinner and an awards program after play has concluded.
