Nearly every day that the food bank opens its doors, at least 100 families anxiously wait outside for a box of necessities, tuna, bread, noodles and milk. Some 128 volunteers at different times gingerly load up 40-pound boxes and hand them out. As they do, they also give a little something extra — comfort.

Ellie, a 3-year-old Golden Retriever, barked joyously as she raced around an agility course one recent evening. Through tunnels, over jumps, and around weave poles, dogs and owners were both challenged to know the course and complete it without running each other over.

We may not have gotten a lot of rain so far this summer, but it sure came through when we needed it most. The folks fighting the Water Wheel Fire got the break they desperately needed —when they needed it the most. Although Pine didn’t get any that night we got a good dousing just in time for Labor Day weekend.

Whew!!!! What a busy and wonderful weekend for Tonto Village. The Labor Day barbecue held by the Fireflies Auxiliary to support the Hellsgate Fire Department was a resounding success. That success was accomplished by not only the Fireflies, but all the volunteer firefighters who helped set up and tear down tables and chairs.

I find it simply amazing that our Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will attack any real or imagined opposition to their agendas. These two elected officials label and smear citizens who simply disagree or need to know more of pending congressional bills as “unpatriotic” “evil-mongers” and “Nazis.”

Nine years ago, 09-09-2000, I suffered the worst wreck of my life. I was living with my mom, Dorothy Pyle, on our Canyon Creek Ranch in New Mexico. I threw a saddle on Jetson, a Quarter Horse Paso Fino cross, and as my dad would have said, “a hell of a wagon” meaning he was a good traveling horse. I waved goodbye to Mom intent on making a little circle, taking the Flying V Trail into the Middle Fork of the Gila River, riding down the river for about six miles then turning up Canyon Creek to home. I wanted to check on the salt in the Bull Pasture and roll up some downed barbed wire at the old Flying V Headquarters in the bottom of the Middle Fork.
