There was something for everyone at the Labor Day bash in Tonto Village. In addition to a great meal of pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, beans and corn on the cob, those in attendance also enjoyed a rummage sale, bake sale and raffle. There was even face painting for the kids.

Whew!!!! What a busy and wonderful weekend for Tonto Village. The Labor Day barbecue held by the Fireflies Auxiliary to support the Hellsgate Fire Department was a resounding success. That success was accomplished by not only the Fireflies, but all the volunteer firefighters who helped set up and tear down tables and chairs.

A special thanks to Bill Snyder who acted as my co-chair at the bake sale all day, and Joe Desrochers, who sold raffle tickets all day, and also helped set out the signs in the pouring rain early Saturday morning. Thanks also to Gary Norem who helped pick up those signs with Bill after the barbecue and to all the neighbors who contributed either items for the rummage sale, the bake sale or buying raffle tickets.

The food was excellent and the people lined up for a great meal of pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, beans and corn on the cob.

The items that were left over from the rummage sale went to the Time Out Shelter.

The Fireflies wish to thank everyone for their help in assuring that the annual event was the best ever!

Fire was a reminder

A special big thank you to all the Hellsgate firefighters who helped control the Water Wheel Fire. This fire was a bit too close to home, and should remind residents that we need to be firewise and ready to move at a moment’s notice if such a thing would happen in your area.

The monsoon has been practically non-existent and the forest is tinder dry. Each one of us who live in the Tonto National Forest need to take special care that we leave our forest still standing and healthy for the next generation and for generations to come.

Melody Morris of Diamond Point Summer Homes, starts this week off with a birthday on Sept. 10. Jeff Younkans of the Hellsgate Fire Department will have his big day Sept. 14. Robert Winchester, a retired Hellsgate firefighter from the Mead Ranch area, will celebrate his birthday on Sept. 18. On Sept. 19, Elaine Tetzke of Tonto Village III adds another candle to her birthday cake. Here’s hoping that happy dreams and magical moments surround you on your special day. Happy birthday everyone!

Double D doings

Even though there was so much activity in the Village this past week, the pool tournaments were held with a good attendance.

This past Sunday afternoon, the eight-ball tournament took place as scheduled. First-place winner was Harvey Poyner. Harvey normally plays in this tournament, and it is great to see him as a first-place winner. Second place went to Brian Mead of Mead Ranch and the third-place winner was Daniel Reese of Mesa del.

Last Tuesday evening the gals played nine-ball and the winner was Payge Ferreira of Mesa del, followed by the second-place winner, Ethel Cain. Patty Boeschling shot for third place. Congratulations to all the winners!
