Members of the Payson Men’s Golf Association represented their hometown well in an interclub competition that drew players from Prescott Country Club, Prescott Antelope and Verde Santa Fe.
The intriguing Sept. 2 shoot-out was played in a low-gross and low-net by flights format.
For Payson, Frank Szakal was a shining star, carding a 64 to take first in the A flight low-net competition.
In winning, he out-dueled PMGA counterpart Terry Lindsey, who was second.
Szakal entered the tournament fresh off winning the PMGA Club championship Aug. 26 at Payson Golf Course.
In A flight low-gross play, Ray Martinez of Prescott was first, and Jessie Smith of Payson second. Martinez finished at 70, and Smith posted a 72.
In B flight low-gross play, former PMGA member Gene Howell, now of Prescott Antelope, took home the gold with a 79. Carding an 88, Payson’s Doug Talbot was second.
In low-net play of the B flight, PMGA member Steve Vincent swung his way to the crown with a 58. A Prescott golfer was second at 72.
Payson players dominated C flight low-gross action with Steve Holmes taking top honors and Bill Shedd second. Holmes scored an 83 and Shedd had a 92.
Gary Rovetto was second in C flight low-net play, despite scoring a 67, the same as the winning Verde Santa Fe player.
Rovetto fell to second on a scorecard playoff.
Closest to the pin winners were Martinez (Prescott, No. 2; 15 feet), Gary Wolf (Prescott, No.5; 9 feet), Vaplon (Payson, No. 8; 4 feet, 2 inches), Bill Gilham (Payson, No. 14; 11 feet, 8 inches) and Joe Baxley (Verde Santa Fe, No. 17; 11 feet, 5 inches).
