Brrrr! Did you feel the chill in the air this morning? (I’m writing this column on Tuesday.)
Fall is right around the corner. Get your jackets out of mothballs, check your firewood, and start finding places in your home that need some insulation to fill in the cracks.
Have you tilled up your garden yet? My tomatoes are getting smaller and smaller and the leaves are now turning brown. Darn! I sure loved having fresh tomatoes all summer.
Hellsgate Fire Department barbecue
Winners of the raffle items were Jim Lyons from Star Valley. He won the Wii play station set. Judy Schlicker of Mesa won the beautiful quilt. The Stihl chain saw was won by Lew Milligan from Ingleside, Texas. Lew is a former peace officer and currently a firefighter in Texas. Lew graciously has donated the chain saw back to the fire department.
The chain saw will be a door prize for the firefighters at their appreciation dinner on Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. at station #21 in Star Valley. The Fireflies will host the dinner.
A huge thank you to Messinger Funeral Home and Mark Waldrup for their donation of 10 cases of bottled water for the barbecue.
Get well wishes
Bob Winchester of Mead Ranch took a nasty fall recently. Bob is a retired Hellsgate firefighter. Bob has been an integral part in establishing station #23 at Mead Ranch.
We all wish for you a speedy recovery, Bob. We know that your lovely wife, Ruthann will take good care of you.
Gloria Alliger starts this next week off with a birthday on Sept. 23. Gloria is very active on the Hellsgate Fire Board and also works full time at the Payson Ranger Station.
On Sept. 26, Pastor Charles Wilcox and his wife Brenda will celebrate their 28 years together. Pastor Wilcox is the former pastor of the Tonto Village Chapel. Happy anniversary to you both.
On Sept. 28, Dara Sutton and Payge Ferriera share their day with another birthday.
Dara lives in Bear Flat but spends a majority of her time in the Village. Dara is the vice president of the Fireflies and is an avid domino player. Dara is also very civic minded and is always there for anyone who needs help.
Payge lives in Mesa del, but is a former Village resident. Payge is a very talented pool player and often wins the tournaments played at the Double D.
May the joy you give to others come back to you on this day. Happy birthday!
Only one tournament was held this past week. On Sunday afternoon the eight-ball tournament was held at the Double D. The big winner was — (Can you guess?) — yep, good ol’ Cliff Landrum. The second-place winner was Jimmy “Rabbit” Stephenson. Betty Koutz shot for third place. Congratulations to all the winners.
