- Now that summer is over with most of us having taken our vacations you might want to start thinking about where to travel next — perhaps not right away, but in the not too distant future. Planning is half the fun, right? I am going to suggest in this week’s column some ideas that just might interest you.
- Oral histories capture more than memories

- There are a number of tools that historians use to help them piece together the past. Old newspapers, old documents and family records are often used. But oral histories sometimes get lost in the shuffle, even though they can be amongst the most valuable. Good oral histories provide a good basis for historians long after the interviewees are gone. This week we look at two major collections of oral histories that have been done locally.

- The Payson Rimstones Rock Club presents its 12th annual Gem and Mineral Show Oct. 10-11 at the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino Event Center Bingo Hall located on the Tonto Apache Reservation, just south of Payson off of Highway 87.
- Potatoes take center stage

- There are so many ways to prepare potatoes that it’s no surprise spuds remain a family favorite. People most often think of potatoes as the ultimate side dish; however, it’s time to move potatoes to the center of the plate. Prepared mashed potatoes, such as Idahoan mashed potatoes, can help add a little extra flavor, crunch or creaminess to a variety of recipes.
- ‘An Evening of Chamber Music’

- An evening of chamber music will be presented by Gila Community College in Payson at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 8 in the Community Room 301. The concert will feature Northern Arizona University School of Music professors Frank Scott (piano), Louise Scott (violin) and Jacquelyn Schwandt (viola) in works by Augusta Read Thomas, Judith Cloud, Bohuslav Martinu and Claude Debussy. There is no admission charge for the concert.
