Playing back-to-back games in turbulent and often unstable weather conditions wasn’t an obstacle the Payson Longhorn golf team couldn’t overcome.
“These young men persevered and stayed mentally tough during two days of very difficult windy conditions,” said PHS coach Bret Morse. He spewed the superlatives following a March 30 four-team shootout at Verde Santa Fe and a three-way match March 31 at The Rim Club.
In both tournaments, the Longhorns emerged victorious in part due to the efforts of Jeffrey Kelley and Mason Dacanay.
Kelley cared a 78 to finish as low medalist at Santa Fe and Dacanay posted a 41 to claim medalist honors at The Rim Club.
Adding to Kelley’s match-winning card were commendable scores from Dacanay (83), Cody Waterman (85), Tyler Apps (85) and Alex Korth (86).
With those five paving the way, the team finished at 331 to run away with the title over Wickenburg (352) Sedona (409) and Camp Verde (428).
At The Rim Club, Waterman and Kelley finished at 43 and Apps posted a 45.
The Horns’ team score of 172 easily outdistanced a 203 by runner-up Wickenburg.
Payson returns to action tomorrow, April 7, at Snowflake in a match that will feature most of the East region teams.
On April 16 and 17 the team will participate in the White Mountain Invitational to be held at Silver Creek, near Show Low, and Snowflake.
