Senior Circle events

Learn about creating a healthy diet and exercise program that will help keep you strong and active at our April 14 Lunch and Learn Cardio Workshop from 11 a.m. to noon at the Senior Circle, 215 N. Beeline Highway. A light lunch will be served.

The Gila County Recorder’s Office will be holding a voter registration drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 15 at the Payson Bashas’ food store.

If you are not a registered voter, have moved, or would like to change your party preference, please come out and see us. Just a reminder, the last day to register to vote in the May 18 Special Election is April 19.

Learn fly-fishing

Join the Payson Flycasters to learn the art of fly-fishing in a two-class series from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 17 and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 24.

Fly-fishing 101 will cover classroom information on fly-fishing basics and history, while Fly-fishing 102 will include hands-on fishing techniques at Green Valley Lake. Both classes meet at the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism Office, 1000 W. Country Club Dr.

Registration for both classes is just $10, and participants must register by April 15 at the Parks and Rec office or online at www.paysonparks.com.

Register for GCC classes

Residents may register now for summer and fall classes at Gila Community College. The available courses are listed online at www.gilaccc.org.

Beginning Fall 2010, students must meet a graduation reading requirement (ENG 91 or a passing placement test score) prior to taking General Education courses.

New class offerings include printmaking, western civilization, Chi Gong, and U.S. national politics.

Popular classes fill fast, so don’t wait.

Local input sought for new Plan on AgingPinal Gila Council for Senior Citizens (PGCSC) is in the process of developing a 3-year Area Plan on Aging for fiscal years 2011-2013, as required under the Federal Older Americans Act. The Area Plan identifies priority needs, goals, objectives, funding and advocacy efforts that will be undertaken by PGCSC and our provider network in developing, implementing and building collaborations and programs for seniors in the region for the next 3 years.

PGCSC will host two public hearings to seek public input for the plan:

• April 15, PGCSC Main Office, 8969 W. McCartney Road, Casa Grande, AZ  at   10 a.m.

• April 16, Miami Senior Center, 506 Live Oak, Miami, AZ at 10 a.m.

If you would like to provide public input for the Area Plan goals and objectives and will not be able to attend the public hearings, please go to www.pgcsc.org and submit your comments by April 28, 2010 or write to PGCSC, 8969 W McCartney Road, Casa Grande, AZ 85194. GED testingGED testing will be conducted by the Gila County School Superintendent’s Office on April 17, May 15 and June 19.

A limited number of spaces are still available for the April 17 test. The deadline to preregister is noon on April 15.

Anyone needing to complete retake tests may want to do so in the April, May or June testing sessions. Anyone wanting to take the full test for the first time may also want to sign up for one of these sessions.

As of April 15, the GED testing fee will increase to $70; the fee of $10 for each retake has not changed. GED candidates must pre-register at 719 S. Beeline Highway, Payson. The non-refundable fee must be paid at the time of pre-registration, in order to reserve a space.

Free greenwaste disposalThe Gila County Board of Supervisors are pleased to announce in honor of Earth Day the Buckhead Mesa Landfill will accept greenwaste at no charge on Saturday, April 17 to encourage residents to clear their property of weeds and brush in preparation of wildfire season. Greenwaste includes trees, brush, pine needles and leaves.

PETCO Adoption Day and bake sale at HSCAZ

The Humane Society of Central Arizona will once again host a PETCO Adoption Day Saturday, April 17 at the shelter at 812 S. McLane Road. With every cat or dog that goes to a new home this Saturday, PETCO will give adopters a coupon book worth 50 percent off on cat or dog food, and 10 percent off an entire purchase at any of their locations.

Also, take advantage of the variety of delicious baked goods that will be available at the shelter on Saturday. Staff and volunteers plan to prepare an assortment of cookies, breads and cakes to satisfy any sweet tooth!

So, if you’re thinking of adding a new member to your family, or just want to have a look around, plan to visit the shelter on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed from 11:30 to 1 for lunch) to see the beautiful cats and dogs who wish to give you unconditional love in exchange for a loving forever home!

SonShine Club open house

Low-cost rabies vaccinationsA low-cost rabies vaccination clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17 at Main Street Animal Clinic, 411 W. Main St.

Rabies vaccinations are just $10. Other vaccinations are available upon request. Your pet is required to be secured at all times.

Licensing fees for all dogs are as follows:

• Town of Payson: $7 spayed/neutered, $20 unaltered

• Town of Star Valley: $5 spayed/neutered, $7 unaltered

• Gila County: $7 spayed/neutered, $15 unaltered.

Real estate courses

Gila Community College is offering Real Estate license renewal courses on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The topics are as follows: April 17, agency (morning), disclosure (afternoon); April 24, contract law (morning), beneficiary deeds (afternoon).

The cost is $20 per class in advance, or $25 per class on the day of instruction.

Theses courses satisfy the Arizona Department of Real Estate’s requirements for continuing education hours for all sale and broker licenses.

Ordination of Carol Reed

Mount Cross Lutheran Church announces the ordination of Carol Reed, a resident of Strawberry, who will be the Pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in Holbrook, AZ.

The ordination will be performed by Bishop Steve Talmage, Bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod, ELCA at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17 at Mount Cross, 601 E. Highway 260. Assisting in the ceremony will be Pastor Elaine Watskey, Assistant to the Bishop and former pastor of Mount Cross; Rev. Sherwood Glover, former Assistant to the Bishop; Dr. Fritz Lampe, former seminary professor; and Rev. Liz Retz, seminary friend of Ms. Reed.

On April 18, Ms. Reed will be installed in her new church in Holbrook at 10 a.m. by Bishop Talmage.
