At least one person is dead and several others injured after two vehicles collided and rolled on Highway 87 south of town Friday.
Sometime around 3 p.m., a Chevrolet pickup and Jeep Cherokee heading southbound on Highway 87, near the Gibson Ranch Road turnoff, crashed for unknown reasons, said Harold A. Sanders, Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesperson.
The collision caused the pickup to roll in the roadway while the Jeep went over an embankment, rolling into a ravine.
“It is unknown from the initial information exactly how many total occupants from both vehicles were injured,” Sanders said.
“The injured were transported to Payson and Scottsdale area medical centers for treatment.”
One of the occupants was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
“I do not have the names of the persons involved or a cause of the collision at this time,” Sanders said.
The right travel lane on the southbound side of the highway was closed a short time to remove debris and both lanes were closed when the helicopter landed.
