The Red Rock Ranger District is proposing to reissue 22 special use permits for commercial outfitters and guide activities located in the district. The district is seeking public comment on this proposal.
Under the plan, permits would be reissued without substantial changes. Non-significant changes to authorized activities, amounts of use, or locations could be made to increase compliance with the forest plan or address resource concerns. This action would not authorize new activities or new locations.
These permits have been in temporary status and reissued annually for at least five years. In some cases, they have been in annual status for 20 years.
Forest Service policy requires that these permits be converted to priority status.
For the areas of Schnebly Hill Road, Soldier Pass and Vultee Arch Road, some commercial outfitter and guide permits would be held in an annual status pending further study. The agency needs additional data to determine whether existing use complies with forest plan guidelines.
A scoping letter, map, list of existing permits and the amounts of authorized use are available on-line at http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/projects/outfitter/index.shtml
