The Payson Longhorn golf team might be closing the gap on two-time defending state champion Snowflake.
Although the Lobos are a talented team and a favorite to three-peat, the Horns have on occasion this season played Snowflake on relatively even terms.
Such was the case April 21 at White Mountain Country Club where Payson finished as runner-up just 15 strokes off the Lobos’ winning pace.
In the six-team field, Snowflake posted a 146, PHS turned in a 161 card and Blue Ridge took the bronze medal at 166.
Although the tournament was played in swirling 25-30 mph winds, some impressive individual scores were turned in, including Parker McDonald’s one-under-par 34.
With the tally, the Snowflake golfer claimed low medalist honors.
For Payson, Cody Waterman was top gun with a 37.
Trailing in the PHS card were Tyler Apps (40), Mason Dacanay (41), Anthony Smith (43), Jeffrey Kelley (43) and Alex Korth (43).
On the junior varsity level at Pinetop Lakes, Cody Bossert shot a 38 on the par 31 course to claim low medalist laurels.
While the junior varsity season is at an end, the varsity gears up for the East regionals set for May 3-4, and the state showdown May 10-11.
