Payson’s David Frohme and Roseanne Hendricks could be entrants into the Special Olympic World Games when they are held in the summer of 2011 in Athens, Greece.
They are possibilities to receive berths because both medaled at the 2010 USA National Special Olympic Games held July 18 to July 23 in Lincoln, Neb.
America’s Olympic team will be chosen from the USA medalists.
As members of Team Arizona, Frohme ran to a gold medal in the 1500-meter run track and field event. In the long jump, he was a bronze medalist.
Before leaving for Lincoln, Frohme predicted he would win the long distance event saying, “I am a runner, that is what I do good.”
Hendricks swam to a bronze in the 50-meter breaststroke.
In all, the Arizona team won eight gold, 13 silver and seven bronze medals in Lincoln.
More than 3,000 SO athletes from around the country participated in the National games.
Frohme, Hendricks and the other members of Team Arizona returned from Lincoln on July 24 and were greeted by a huge welcome home party at U.S. Airways Center.
Among those on to hand to laud the team were former NFL quarterback Dave Kreig, Ms. Arizona United States Tristan Topps and Phoenix Coyotes mascot Howler.
Frohme and Hendricks were accompanied to the USA games by longtime local SO coordinator and coach Becky Derwort.
The Payson trio and their teammates were flown to Lincoln in style, flying on the same Swift Aviation charter aircraft that carries the Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Coyotes and Phoenix Suns.
