Joanne Yamashita has been taking qigong at the Senior Circle for two years, coming to the class twice a week. She was in a car accident in 1990 and suffered two broken legs, requiring a metal plate in her left leg. Experts thought that she would be confined to a wheelchair, but through therapy she not only walks, but also leads a very active life. Joanne says that qigong has been a driving force behind her positive mental health and overall well-being.

Qigong, often called Chinese yoga, is an easily learned moving meditation that can be practiced either seated or standing. Qigong has been particularly effective for individuals with chronic health conditions.

Practice improves cardiovascular and circulatory function, increased vitality, an enhanced immune system, balance and overall physical and mental health and well-being.

Navis Schmidt will also be meeting with the Senior Circle qigong class on Thursday, Aug. 17 to help with students with their techniques. Senior Circle qigong meets from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Mondays and Thursdays.
