Tonto National Forest officials announced Wednesday that the forest is joining with other agencies included under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act in hosting a no fee weekend, August 14 and 15, in observance of the back to school season.
“This is a great opportunity for families to visit the Tonto National Forest and take advantage of all its wonderful offerings as kids go back to school and families return to their busy schedules,” said Delvin Lopez, Public Service Group Leader. “There is much that can be learned on our forest – it’s an outdoor classroom.”
Fees are still required at the following concessionaire-operated campgrounds: Ponderosa Campground, Sharp Creek Campground, Christopher Creek Campground, Christopher Creek Group Campground, Upper Tonto Campground, Houston Mesa Campground and Houston Mesa Horse Campground.
Two more no-fee events are scheduled in 2010: September 25, National Public Lands Day and November 11, Veterans Day.
During all other times, the Tonto Pass is required at more than 50 recreation sites including Salt and Verde river locations, boat launch ramps, swimming areas and campgrounds.
A list of Tonto Pass vendor locations is available at the Tonto National Forest Web site, www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto , or call the Tonto National Forest at (602) 225-5200.
