This week one of our daughters in our family is visiting us from Yuma, where it is extremely hot! Our daughter Vicki Nelson and her husband Bill are staying with us for the week and we will be celebrating Vicki’s birthday a bit early.
Her big day is Aug. 10. I won’t tell you how many candles there will be on her birthday cake, she says she does not want to discuss it! Her age is a closed subject. They both have been a great help to us during their stay, and we will surely hate to see them leave. We have had a great time with them.
I said in last week’s column that I would give you the total rainfall for July in Tonto Village. There has been 5-1/2 inches of rainfall which is quite a bit for just one month. Of course, these totals are unofficial.
The yearly event, “Duel of the Dominoes” will be held Wednesday, Aug. 18. The Christopher Creek Domino Group and the Domino Divas from Tonto Village will be dueling it out over domino tables at the Christopher Creek Bible Church beginning at 1 p.m. All those attending should be prepared for the duel of their lives with lots of fun, laughter and loot.
Please bring a covered dish to be shared by all and kindly bring a recipe with your dish so that we can share the bounty. Don’t miss the duel of the year, and we hope to see you there.
Hellsgate Fire Department
The August meeting of the Hellsgate Fire Board will be held in Tonto Village this month. It will be held at station #22. The meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. Hope to see you there.
Angela Lecher and Julie Hatch were recognized for their years of service to the Arizona Fire Chiefs Association at the annual conference that was held this past weekend. Congratulations to Angie and Julie.
There will be a free, free, free, friends and family CPR class held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 17 at station #21 in Star Valley. The maximum number of people that will be able to attend is 16 people, so call Karen Carlen and sign up now at (928) 474-3835.
On Aug. 15, Randy Slapnicka of Tonto Creek Road will add another candle to his birthday cake. Randy is well known in our area as an entrepreneur in real estate and successful restaurants such as the restaurant in Forest Lakes known as Bugles.
Aug. 17 is the birthday of Phon Sutton of Bear Flat. Phon is a very community-minded individual and has helped anyone who needs it without question. Thank you, Phon, for your kindness and caring for others.
Brenda Wilcox of Houston Mesa also celebrates her birthday on Aug. 17. Brenda is Pastor Wilcox’s wife, who was the former pastor of Tonto Village Chapel for several years. Thank you for your contribution to the Village and surrounding area.
Happy birthday to each and everyone of you. A thought to keep in mind on your special day: Hold tight to the dreams you have today, and walk boldly in their direction.
With the very bad economy in our area as well as elsewhere, and with school just starting, there is a need for socks, underwear and shoes for the schoolchildren in the surrounding area.
An organization known as Kaitie’s Closet is doing its best to help those people in need. Either a donation of clothes or money would be appreciated and the people in our area who can be contacted for either kind of donation are Nancy Yoakum at (928) 478-4370 or Dara Sutton at (928) 478-0052.
The next time that clothes will be distributed is Aug. 25 at Julia Randall Elementary School. Either Nancy or Dara can be contacted for more information and give you the time of distribution.
The pool tables at the Double D last week were humming with some great shots made by the Double D nine-ball gals. When the competition was over and the chalk dust settled, Sharon Marksbury of Kohl’s Ranch came out as the first-place winner.
Second place was taken by Brenda Slapnicka of Rancho Tonto Catch a Trout on the Tonto Creek Road. Brenda has not played much, but she came out pretty well from being away from the game for a while.
Betty Koutz shot for third place. Betty is a regular who almost always comes in one of the top spots.
Congratulations to all the winners.
