Friends And Neighbors Club Invites Rim Residents To Join The Fun

The Friends and Neighbors (FAN) Club is inviting Rim residents to join and have some fun while helping students in Payson schools.

The FAN Club facilitates the fund-raising efforts of students in co-curricular and extra-curricular organizations and groups. It is most often associated with the school sports teams, but it is available to help any school group that comes to it.

In the last four to five years, it has raised more than $200,000 to help students.

President Donovan Thornhill gave the examples of the group’s help with the recent alumni volleyball game, assistance and guidance to the new cheerleading coach in organizing the squad’s traditional Homecoming Navajo Taco Dinner and the concession stand the school band has at the football games.

A couple of years ago it bought the scorers’ table for Wilson Dome with the money it earned through its 50-50 drawing at the football games. It also does 50-50 drawings at the volleyball games.

“We don’t have a real big bank account,” he said. So, when money is given to a group — like the volleyball team for the alumni game — it is paid back from the proceeds of the event and the balance then goes into the group or team account. Its funds come from such things as the 50-50 drawings and business sponsorships it sells for the seasonal sports programs, banners and the sports calendars.

So, when the FAN Club meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of every month — that’s this Wednesday, Aug. 11 — everyone is invited to show up and participate. There are no individual dues and members can pick the programs with which they want to help; they are not obligated to help with every event.

Thornhill said the group is interested in getting new members to help it brainstorm ideas that will benefit the students in Payson schools.

It is not necessary to have students in school to participate, he said.

The events the group helps with are those that have been authorized by the PHS Student Government organization, which keeps the calendar so things don’t overlap.

“It’s fun and parents can get to know the parents of their children’s friends,” he said.

In addition to Thornhill, the officers of the FAN Club are Debbie Brown, vice president; Shelly Randall, secretary; and Wanda Randall, treasurer.
