Join Parks and Recreation hiking instructors for a Payson Area Trails System (PATS) Group-Led Hike on the Houston Trail from Houston Mesa Trailhead to Flat Rock at 8 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 21. Participants will meet at the Houston Mesa Trailhead, which is 1 mile east of Highway 87 on the south side of Houston Mesa Road. The hike is approximately 2 miles long and is easy to moderate hiking. This is a free event to the public and a great hike for families with children. Don’t forget hiking boots and water. Pre-registration is preferred, but participants can also register the day of the event. Thrift Store Day

The Senior Thrift Store, 512 W. Main Street, will observe Thrift Store Day Tuesday, Aug. 17 with special sales, refreshments, door prizes and balloons for children. The store is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Attention voters of Pine-Strawberry

The Gila County Recorder’s Office will be conducting early voting for the upcoming Aug. 24 primary election from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 17 at the Pine-Strawberry Baptist Church.

Early voting started Thursday, July 29 and ends Friday, Aug. 20.

Half-day at schools

Payson Unified School District will observe a half-day in-service day Wednesday, Aug. 18.

Julia Randall, Payson and Frontier Elementary Schools dismiss at 11:45 a.m. Lunch will be served to students before they depart. Rim Country Middle School dismisses at 12:30 p.m. after serving lunch. Payson High School dismisses at 12:05 p.m. without serving lunch, followed by a brief, optional club period.

The RCMS/PHS buses depart from the schools at 12:35 p.m.

Payson Center for Success High School does not observe the half-day in-services and will operate on its regular schedule.

Child Care Fair

A Child Care Fair, featuring free early childhood screenings for all children from birth to 5 years and information on community resources, will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 18 at the First Assembly of God Church, next to Green Valley Park.

No appointments are needed.

Rodeo week

The 126th Annual World’s Oldest Rodeo kicks off with a mixer at Chapman Auto Center at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 18 and continues will all kinds of fun and festivities through the 1 p.m. rodeo, Sunday, Aug. 22.

The mixer is from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 18. This will be followed with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association Cactus Series Rodeo at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 19 at the Payson Event Center — admission is a can of food for area charities.

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rodeo begins at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 20 at the Payson Event Center, with gates opening at 5 p.m. This is the night that benefits breast cancer research and support through the Tough Enough to Wear Pink program. Every contestant in pink will net a $3 donation for breast cancer research and support and everyone in the audience in pink will get another $1 donated to the cause. There will be a performance at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21, with gates opening at 11 a.m. and another at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21 dedicated to the armed services and veterans, gates open at 5 p.m.; the final performance is at 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 22, gates open at 11 a.m. — all performances are at the Payson Event Center.

Tickets are $18 for those 13 to 64; $14 for seniors, 65+; and $10 for children ages 8 to 12; those under 7 and under will be admitted free. There are $2 off coupons available in the Roundup and on selected Coca-Cola and Canadian Club products.

Tickets are available at: Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce; all Circle K’s, Bill Armstrong Pawn in Star Valley, the Payson library and the Payson Roundup.

Friday and Saturday night there will be a rodeo dance at the Oxbow Saloon, with the music starting at 9 p.m.

The annual Rodeo Parade — Ridin’ and Ropin’ — is at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 21, starting at Green Valley Park, heading east on Historic Main Street and ending at Sawmill Crossing. The parade is sponsored by the chamber and APS.

The stock contractor for all the event center programs is Salt River Rodeo.

Look for the Roundup’s special Rodeo publication at the Women’s Rodeo Thursday night, inside Friday’s Roundup and at the other rodeo performances.

Scrub sale

Apparel Pro Health Care Wear will be having a Scrub Sale in the Payson Regional Medical Center west lobby from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 19. Come check out the new lab coats, scrubs, warm-ups, stethoscopes, shoes, accessories and much more.

Football scrimmage Friday

The Payson Longhorns football team will kickoff the season at 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 20 with a scrimmage against Camp Verde. The price of admission is a non-perishable food item to be donated to St. Vincent DePaul Rim Country Food Bank.

The Longhorn cheerleaders will be running the concessions stand and the proceeds will help pay for new uniforms.
