Three Candidates Will Contest Two Payson School Board Openings

Three candidates will contest two vacant Payson school board seats this November, including incumbent Rory Huff.

Long-time board member Viki Holmes did not file to run for her seat. Challengers include Barbara Shepherd, a secretary at the county attorney’s office, and Darsha Oestmann, who was not available for comment before press time.

Huff, running for his second four-year term, said he wanted to continue his efforts working for a successful district. “I just like having an impact on the education of the youth of the community,” he said.

Shepherd said she moved to Payson three years ago from Globe, where she sat on the board from 2002 to 2006.

“I miss being on the school board,” said Shepherd, adding that she enjoys helping kids and advocating on parents’ behalf.

“I felt like they needed some new blood here, some new opinions,” Shepherd said.
