With many members in Williams at Elephant Rock golf course competing in an invitational tournament, the Payson Men’s Golf Association’s weekly low net shootout was reduced to two flights.
In the fray contested Aug. 10 at Payson Golf Course, Jerry McGuire won A flight honors and Bill McKenna took first among the B flight players.
McGuire finished at 63 and McKenna carded a 68.
Trailing McGuire were Herb Sherman (64) and Ed Flores (69). Ward Johnson (69) took second in the B flight and Ed West (74) was third.
In the closest to the pin competition, Steve Holmes double dipped, winning on No. 2 and No. 5.
On No. 2, he was 16 feet, 11-1/2 inches shy of an ace. On No. 5 he finished 17 feet, 4 inches from the pin.
Gary Campbell won on No. 8 with a lie of 18 feet, 6 inches. Ed Kuhns pocketed prize money on No. 14, where his tee shot rolled to within 10 feet, 1 inch of an ace.
McGuire was closest on No. 17 at 14 feet, 3 inches.
The PMGA returns to action Aug. 25 for the third and final round of the Club Championship Match Play tournament. The first two rounds were played Aug. 4 and Aug. 11. On Sept. 8, the PMGA travels to Silver Creek near Show Low because the greens at PGC will be undergoing maintenance. The PMGA season wraps up Nov. 3 with a low net turkey shoot
