After a full month of preseason practices and controlled scrimmages on Aug. 28 against Round Valley in Eagar-Springerville, the Payson High soccer teams are primed and ready to spring into region action.

The Lady Longhorns, under first-year coach Amy Wilcox, are first to begin, traveling today, Aug. 31, to Lakeside where they will take on the perennially tough Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets.

Wilcox has said that the team’s performance against the Jackets will be a good indication of just how good the squad will be throughout the season.

Game times are 2 p.m. for junior varsity and 4 p.m. for varsity.

This season, the jayvees are being coached by Amy’s father, Randy, a former Lady Horn head varsity coach.

Local fans will have the opportunity to catch the boys team in season opening action tomorrow, Sept. 1 against Show Low at Rumsey Park. Game time is 4 p.m. The boys team does not have a junior varsity program this year due to lack of players who turned out for the squad.

The highlight of the season for the Longhorns will be the annual Payson Invitational to be played Sept. 24 and Sept. 25 at Rumsey Park.
