Blogging 101 — Don’T Miss Out On The Fun

Have you started testing the social media waters yet? Maybe you’ve posted a few updates on Twitter, “stalked” a few old classmates on Facebook, or broadcast your daughter’s dance recital on YouTube. But even with all that activity, you might be missing out on the bread and butter of all social media: the blog.

Blogs (short for weblogs) were the pioneers of social media, and they are still the best way to communicate meaningful information (stories, musings, photos, videos, etc.) with friends and family. It doesn’t take much to start a blog, and it really doesn’t take much to maintain one, either. And whether you’re running a business or merely keeping in touch with friends and family across the globe, there’s no better tool than a blog to get your message out there.

The first thing you need to do is set up a blog platform. This can be done through services like or They are free and very easy to set up. You’ll create a password, choose a template, decide what add-ons you’d like to use, and even select a domain name. When you setup your blog, be sure to advertise it to friends and family (or business contacts, depending on the type of blog) via other social media outlets, your Web site, or even e-mail. You’re going to be putting time into this thing; it would be a shame if no one knew about it.

Once you get your blog up and running, it’s your responsibility to maintain it. Unofficial online etiquette states that blogs need to be updated regularly. This typically means more than once a quarter. If you don’t update on a regular basis (like once a month or even more frequently), your readers start to forget about you. Sure, your mother, spouse, and a close friend or two might still read it, but you’ll be missing out on lots of other followers who have given up checking for new updates.

Blogs can be about anything — that’s the beauty of them. You can write about what interests you and you don’t have to look over your shoulder to see what an editor or manager says. Just be yourself. Here are some ideas on what you can write to keep things interesting: current events, favorite memories, political insights, holiday stories, interesting recipes, funny observations, book reviews, movie reviews, travel journals and much more

There is no right or wrong way to do a blog. The only thing you could possibly do wrong is to miss out on the fun. Give your loved ones what they really want — a chance to get to know you even better. Blogging is a great way to create a legacy that will stand the test of time.
