Enjoy the sounds of the season with a jazz twist at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 12 at the Community Presbyterian Church with guitarist and vocalist Pete Pancrazi. The month’s jazz concert will be preceded by a light buffet at noon. A donation of $5 or more from each person is requested at the door to cover the performance costs. The buffet is free to those attending the performance. The church is located at 800 W. Main St.

Soroptimist International of Zane Grey will be sponsoring a Holiday Wine & Cheese Party from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday Dec. 10 at the Best Western, 801 N. Beeline Highway. There will be wine and appetizers to sample, plus some great raffle and silent auction items to bid on. The cost is $15.

During the festivities, money raised from the Radiothon in October will be presented to Rim Country Arizonans for Children, Payson Community Kids and Time Out. The mission of the Soroptimist organization is to help improve the lives of women and girls in the community and throughout the world; service is the passion of its members.

Food bank benefit at Cardo’s

Enjoy a fun evening of live music at Cardo’s in Payson Friday, Dec. 10 celebrating the release of the latest John Carpino CD, “Life As We Know It.” Proceeds from CD sales will go to the local food bank.

Admission is free, but everyone is encouraged to bring a can of food or a non-perishable food item. The music starts at 5:30 p.m.

Write a letter, save a life

This Saturday, Dec. 11, the Payson chapter of Amnesty International will join with thousands of local chapters across the world in the Annual Global Write a Thon, the largest letter-writing event in the world.

Join members of the group at East West Exchange, 100 N. Tonto St., from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. as they meet their pledge to write 400 letters to bring freedom to prisoners of conscience, to eliminate violence toward women, to reduce maternal mortality and to demand justice for others whose human rights are at risk.

Holiday Crafts Fair, Bake Sale

Frontier Elementary School is inviting residents to its Holiday Crafts Fair and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11 in the physical education dome.

Special See’s Candy sale

See’s Candy will be available for purchase at Safeway and Bashas’ from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., both Dec. 11 and Dec. 18. A variety of regular candies and holiday items will be available.

Sales are conducted by the local Soroptimist club to raise money for their service projects in Rim Country. For more information, please contact Tambra Armenta (928) 978-2356.

PES Winterfest

Payson Elementary’s Annual Winterfest is from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11 at the school at 500 E. Rancho Road.

The PES PTO invites everyone in the Rim Country to the event. The $2 entry includes unlimited fun with games, bounce house, horse drawn wagon rides by “Old West Ranch Adventures” from Tonto Basin, a cupcake walk and much more.

There will also be an amazing array of silent auction baskets donated by each classroom and freshly made baked goods for sale.

Hotdogs, chilidogs, hot cocoa and refreshments can be purchased for $1 each.

Choral Society holiday program Saturday

Mark your calendars — the Payson Choral Society’s Christmas concert “He is Born,” directed by Daria Mason, with accompaniment by Victoria Harris, comes to the Payson High School Auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 11. Performances are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Concert tickets are $10 at the door for adults, and $8 in advance. Children and students up to age 18 are admitted free. Tickets may be purchased in advance from Choral Society members, Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and at the library. Tickets will also be available at the door before each concert.

Proceeds from the concerts provide musical scholarships to middle school and high school students. These are awarded each year at the spring concert.

Auditions for the spring concert will be held at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 13 at the Payson United Methodist Church on Easy Street. For added information, call John Landino, (928) 468-0023.

Children’s Christmas program scheduled

The Payson Children’s Theatre/Choral Group will present the Christmas program “Christmas at Bethlehem Gulch” at 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11 and Sunday, Dec. 12 at Ponderosa Baptist Church, 1800 N. Beeline Highway, Payson.

The public is invited to attend one of these performances. No admission will be charged, but love offerings will be accepted to help the group and its programs continue.

Jazz concert

Eat and be merry at the Community Presbyterian Church Sunday, Dec. 12.

The month’s jazz concert will be preceded by a light buffet at noon, with the performance starting at 12:30 p.m. (not the usual 2 p.m.)

The concert will feature guitarist and vocalist Pete Pancrazi, plus pianist Claudio Bloom.

A donation of $5 or more from each person is requested at the door to cover the performance costs. The buffet is free to those attending the performance.

Christian Clinic open house

The Payson Christian Clinic will have an open house from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 12. The public is welcome to come visit the facility at 701 S. Ponderosa St.

Candlelight Memorial Walk

The Rim Country Chapter of The Compassionate Friends, a national self-help support organization for families grieving the death of a child, will light candles Sunday, Dec. 12 in an act of symbolic remembrance. This is the 14th annual Worldwide Candle Lighting®, an event believed to be the largest mass candle lighting in the world.

The local candle lighting event will be held at 6:45 p.m. at Green Valley Park. After a brief introduction, candles will be lit precisely at 7 p.m., and will remain lit for an hour while attendees walk around the lake.

Everyone is invited to join in this moving tribute, whether or not they have suffered the personal loss of a child..
